Hole in one: Bronco Golf teams take fifth place at respective tournaments

Blake Brown shot a one-under par 71 to finish in a three-way tie for ninth and lead Boise State University to a fifth-place finish at the Ron Moore Invitational in Denver, Colo., Tuesday afternoon.
Brown, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., completed the three rounds at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club with a four-under par total of 212. Junior John Baranco followed Brown with a one-over par total of 217 to place tied for 18th during the two-day tournament.

Boise State junior Robbie Richards finished the tournament tied for 26th with a three-over par 219, while senior Scott Loewen tied for 39th with a total of 222 (+6), followed by Drew Surmeier’s 232 (+16).

As a team, Boise State recorded its best round of the invitational Tuesday with a two-under par total score of 286.
Scott Loewen fired the best round of the Broncos on Tuesday finishing with a three-under par 69,followed by Brown’s 71 (-1), Baranco and Surmeier with 73s (+1), and Richards with a 76 (+4). The blue and orange turned in the fourth best
round of the day, 13 strokes back of the top round recorded by the University of Colorado at 275.

Overall, the Broncos maintained the fifth place ranking they had after two rounds with a three-round total of 866 (+2).

They held off Cal State Northridge who finished at 869, Denver at 872 and Central Arkansas at 888.

All three started the day within four strokes of Boise State. Campbell University made a late charge on Tuesday passing Central

Arkansas with a round of 279, and a final total of 872 to tie Denver for seventh place.

The Broncos’ fifth place finish out of 17 teams gives them a record of 8-4-0 overall. They will head for Corvallis, Ore., next week when Boise State will compete at the 10-team Guistina Memorial Classic hosted by Oregon State University.

Women

The first tournament of the fall season solidified the Boise State women’s golf team as a fierce competitor in the west. Junior Iris Ocariza led the Broncos to a fifth place finish at the Northwest Dodge Dealers Inland Cup, held at the par-72, 6,051 yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course, Tuesday.

Ocariza, hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, entered the day knotted in a tie for 21st, but after firing a 72 (+1) during the final round she climbed her way 10-sports on the charts to finish the three-round tournament with a score of 228 (+15). Overall, Ocariza finished 11th, marking her 10th top-20 career finish.
Also completing the tournament in the top-20 was freshmen Noelle Zavaleta, who carded a three-round score of 231 (+18) after posting a 78 (+7) during the final round. Zavaleta finished the event knotted in a tie for 17th, earning her first top-20 finish of her career.

Teammate Llindsey Shean notched her seventh career top-20 finish after knocking one stroke off of her second round score, shooting a 76 (+5) during the final round to complete the invite in a tie for 20th.

As a team, the Broncos fired their best single-round score of the tournament, the second best of the day, as they shaved four strokes off their previous score to tally a final-round score of 305 (+21).

At the end of the two-day tournament, Boise State finished fifth with a three-round score of 929 (+77).

The Broncos now prepare to travel to Corvallis, Ore., where they will tee off against some of the nation’s elite at the Oregon State Invitational, Sept. 22-23.
