Although Boise State remains a dry campus, the State Board of Education approved the sale and consumption of alcohol in the new Stueckle Sky Club of Bronco Stadium.
According to Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier, alcohol is also permitted on the patio of the Caven-Williams Sports Complex.
These places differ from other areas of campus in that they are considered, by the Board of Education, controlled areas where alcohol consumption can be regulated.
Access to the Sky Club is limited to ticket holders or employees, and the only way to get to the sky club is through the elevators built for it. These, Bleymaier said, are manned by security.
“It’s the one area in the stadium we can secure and control access and … beverages.” Bleymaier said.
Despite this control, some students still find it unfair to serve alcohol in only certain portions of the stadium.
“If they aren’t going to have it for the rest of the stadium, they shouldn’t have it there,” junior Brian Laridis said.
However, the alcohol permit doesn’t bother many students.
“If people are forking out $40,000 a year for tickets up there, they should be able to drink alcohol,” sophomore Brandon Weaver said.
The Sky Club contains four levels, all of which have a full bar and sell alcohol. Alcohol is sold until the beginning of the fourth quarter. At that point sales must stop.
Boise State went to the board more than three years ago to receive an alcohol beverage permit, before construction or ticket sales even received approval. The permit was updated again last month at the August board meeting.
In order to receive the alcohol beverage permit for the Stueckle Sky Club, the university filled out the proper applications to prove that the location would be controlled.
