If the Boise State University football team were to be graded on their ‘first real test’ this season, they would pass … and fail.
The Bronco offense played Saturday night was a tale of two different halves. The defense gave a solid A for effort the whole night that resulted in a 20-7 win against the Bowling Green Falcons.
The Broncos came out firing on all cylinders in the first and second quarters, resulting in all 20 of their points. Quarterback Kellen Moore was a blistering 11-of-13 during the first half for 133 yards, including a 39-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jeremy Childs.
“It was great having Jeremy back,” Moore said.
Also working during the first half offensively was senior running back Ian Johnson.
The running back rushed for 92 of his 97 yards in the first and second quarters, including a 53-yard run. Johnson also produced two of BSU’s three touchdowns.
The offense for BSU was a bright light in the first half that should have shone over to the second, but for some reason it didn’t.
“Second half just wasn’t the way we should be playing. I’ll take some of the blame,” Moore said. “I need to make more completions.”
While the offense struggled to get things clicking, it was the Broncos’ defense that rose to the challenge.
“First off I just want to say how pleased right now we are with our defense,” head coach Chris Petersen said Saturday night.
As Bowling Green slowly came alive in the second half, the BSU defense was solid as a rock and stayed sound against a tricky and very complex BGSU offense. The defense for BSU also seemed to come up with the big play when they needed it. They stopped the Falcons numerous times on big third down plays and only let BGSU score once during the entire game.
“That one score we did give up was frustrating,” senior linebacker Tim Brady said. “The way our defense is playing right now it’s exciting, we’re 11 guys that love playing together.”
Sophomore Jeron Johnson led the defense with 13 tackles and senior Ellis Power recorded 11 as well a sack for a 17-yard loss.
The defense ended the game when junior Kyle Wilson intercepted a pass from BGSU quarterback Tyler Sheehan. That ending was indicative of the way the second half went for both teams.
Next week, BSU will face their biggest challenge of the season when they travel to Eugene to play the University of Oregon, a team they know they can’t beat playing like they did tonight.
“Personally, as far as our offense, we just need to get going a little more,” Moore said.
“We need to score more points than that.”
