The Boise State volleyball team dropped to 0-6 this weekend after falling 3-0 to Portland State, 3-0 to No. 9-ranked University of Washington (4-0) and 3-1 to Gonzaga University (2-5) during the Northwest Challenge hosted by the University of Washington at the Bank of America Arena.
The Boise State volleyball kicked off their 2008 road season on Thursday evening in day one of the Northwest Challenge hosted by the University of Washington. In their fourth match of the season the Broncos faced Portland State University in their first of three matches in the round-robin tournament. Improving to 3-1, Portland State swept Boise State (0-4) in three sets, 25-22, 25-14, and 25-14 in the Thursday night match at the Bank of America Arena.
Portland State 3, Boise State 0
The Broncos started out strong last Thursday, posting a .114 hitting percentage and tallying 10 kills in set one. However, PSU was able to out-do the Broncos with 16 kills and a .160 hitting percentage to earn the first set win. In the second set, PSU was able to up their level of play, hitting .276 and registering 13 kills while BSU was unable to get their offense going, hitting .000 after notching seven kills and seven errors in 29 attempts. The Vikings were able to shut down the Broncos offense in set three, hitting a .423 percentage with 15 kills while the Broncos were held to six kills and a .074 hitting percentage.
Freshman Elizabeth Griffin led the Bronco offense with seven kills while sophomore Alisha King added six kills on the night. Senior setter Mandy Klein was able to hit .333 with two kills and ran the offense with 17 set assists.
No. 9 Washington 3, Boise State 0
In their second match of the Northwest Challenge the Broncos faced the No. 9-ranked Washington Huskies.
In the first set, Washington earned the first two points and was able to continually build a comfortable lead from start to finish, downing the Broncos 25-11. Washington simply outdid the Broncos tallying three service aces and notching 17 kills compared to BSU’s six kills in the first set. The Broncos, however, led the first set in blocks with two.
Set two was very similar, with the Huskies earning a 25-15 victory to go up 2-0 in sets.
Although down two sets, the Broncos came out punching in set three, but the Huskies were too much in the end winning 25-17.
Gonzaga 3, Boise State 1
In their third match of the Northwest Challenge, second match of the day, the Broncos dropped a heartbreaking 3-1 decision to Gonzaga University. After battling against Washington earlier in the day, the Broncos were unable to hold off the Bulldogs falling 25-18, 22-25, 25-12 and 26-24 in their final match of the tournament.
The first set proved to be on the side of the Bulldogs who earned a 25-18 win after notching 16 kills and a .265 hitting percentage. The Broncos were able to tally 12 kills however six hitting errors brought their percentage to .130 in the first set.
The Broncos were led by Alisha King who knocked out 12 kills on the night.
The Broncos continue their season on Friday, Sept. 12 when they take on Brigham Young University at the Wisconsin Inntowner Invite in Madison, Wisc. They also face Indiana University-Perdue University Indianapolis and Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Freshman Janelle Jin scored the match-winner in the 43rd minute to keep Broncos undefeated with 2-1 victory over instate rival Idaho State in the first match of the Governor’s Cup last Friday in Moscow, Idaho.
BSU’s win keeps the young Bronco squad undefeated in 2008 at 3-0-1 to tie the school record for best start to a season. The victory also snapped a two-match losing streak to the Bengals.
Junior Andrea Huerta continued her scoring ways giving Boise State an early lead with a header off a Tara Roetter cross in the 12th minute for a 1-0 Bronco advantage. The junior from Centennial High in Meridian, Idaho, has now scored the first goal for the Broncos in all four matches this season as she increased her team and conference scoring lead to four goals.
Down one, ISU responded in the 30th minute when Taylor Powell scored off an Annamarie Hofstetter pass. The strike knotted the match at one goal apiece with 15 minutes to go in the opening period.
That setup Jin’s decisive strike just before the half. The Broncos drove down the field when freshman Chelsea Robinson served the ball in from the right side to the back post. Jin tracked the ball down by moving behind the defense to the post, one touched it, then fired a shot past the keeper for her first career goal and game-winner as a Bronco at the 42:22 mark.
The win improves Boise State to 3-0-1 on the season and 4-6-1 versus Idaho State all-time. This was the first of nine consecutive road games for the Broncos. Meanwhile, the loss dropped the Bengals to 2-2-0 on the year.
