Senate goes back to school

Nothing funny happened on the way to the Forum Tuesday.

The Associated Students of Boise State University Senate uneventfully reconvened in the Student Union Building Forum Sept. 2 after a four-month summer hiatus.

Although the Senate’s first agenda was sparse, Senate Pro Tempore Joel Henretty said the senators are ready to work.

“They’re highly motivated,” Henretty said Tuesday.

The legislative body spent the last few weeks training – a process that Henretty said is never quite done.

“It’s a learning process,” he said. “That’s the thing about government: it’s constantly progressing.”

Tuesday’s meeting featured a brief “Welcome Back” address from ASBSU President Trevor Grigg. Grigg reminded the Senate to take responsibility for its actions and remain professional.

Henretty also stressed that the senators must strive to manage their time and senatorial duties efficiently.

“We’re always students,” he said. “Our coursework comes first.”

In this same efficient light, Henretty and Vice President Joe Bunt decided to restructure the way the Senate evaluates legislation.

Legislation, as a general rule, will now be voted on only at the Senate’s Thursday meetings. Tuesday meetings will be for the introduction and discussion of bills. This decision is no doubt a response to the frequent “fast-tracking” of legislative documents in last term’s Senate.

“It allows legislation to go through its due process,” Henretty said.

Priority one for this greenhorn Senate is filling seats. Sen. At-Large Bridget Montgomery resigned this summer to accept a full-time off-campus position. She will continue full-time coursework at Boise State.

College of Applied Sciences Sen. Robert Heise also accepted a full-time position in Boise State’s Parking and Transportation office. He now serves as liaison between the employee and student Senates.

The Senate also lost Sen. Gabe Murphy and Sen. Cortney Christian to Grigg’s executive staff.

Sen. Geo Engberson, chair of the Appointment and Review Committee, said several replacements are currently being considered.

This first meeting of the year also featured the introduction of newly hired Assistant Director of Student Activities Charlie Varland. Varland replaced Rob Meyer as advisor to ASBSU.

The student Senate meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the SUB Forum at 4 p.m.

Students, faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend.
