Students use skills, pay the bills

Job opportunities – from health promotions marketing to making lattes – ran the gamut at the Boise State Career Center’s Annual Student Employment Fair last Wednesday.

The Quad pulsed with steady lines of students clustered around orange, blue and white tents filled with employers advertising for both community and on-campus jobs.

Jennifer Ross, career counselor and event coordinator for the Career Center, was excited about the large, steady turnout of students. Ross noted that this was the first year the Career Center held the event outdoors and invited off-campus employers to attend.

“We’ve had great turnout this year, and a lot of the off-campus employers have given us positive feedback about the event,” Ross said.

While this is the first year the job fair has included community employers, the Career Center allows off-campus employers to post positions regularly on BroncoJobs, a campus-wide job search engine.

“Anyone in the community can post, but we’ll screen the employers to make sure pay isn’t commission-based or require a start-up fee,” Ross said.

The Career Center encouraged off-campus employers who offer flexible schedules for busy full-time students to attend.

Heather Cotton of The Fixx, a downtown coffee shop that opened last March, was among the handful of community-based employers at the fair.

“Most of our work force is students,” Cotton said, who is looking for a part-time barista for the shop.

Jodi Brawley of Health, Wellness, and Counseling Services was pleased about the interest and sizeable student turnout the event brought.

“We’re here to promote a work-study position, as well as our peer educator internship,” Brawley said.

The peer educator internship allows students to participate in a health promotions outreach role where they can earn a stipend and credits.

In addition to the annual Student Employment Fair, the Career Center provides a bevy of student-focused career and job facilitation services including resume critiquing, career planning and counseling.
