Back to the big play for the Big Blue

It took a little while for the Boise State offense to start clicking Saturday night. When it came together it was less a click and more a bang.

And a bang was all that was heard for the rest of the evening.

The Broncos brought a familiar look back to Bronco Stadium. Calling creative plays is back in a massive way.

The first major maneuver came with Tanyon Bissel. The senior wide receiver lined up under center and took the snap. He was off. He carried 41 yards to set up the next play.

Sophomore wide receiver Titus Young came around on a reverse and was gone – 24 yards later and another touchdown for BSU.

Young didn’t put the breaks on. In the second quarter, freshman quarterback Kellen Moore put all he had into a toss to Young. It made for an 80-yard touchdown pass.

“Just give him the ball,” Moore said. “Ty has never been covered in a year and a half. Just lay it out to him and let him go and get it.”

Young finished with 142 yards and seven receptions thanks to Moore’s savvy presence on the field.

“I told him in the huddle before,” Young said. “Just throw it as far as you can. Let’s make this play real quick. And he did pretty good.”

With big plays come heavy hits. Freshman linebacker Aaron Tevis made his debut for the Broncos doing just that.

He was credited for two sacks to lead the team. His first came early in the first quarter to knock Idaho State University quarterback and Boise native Russel Hill backward 12 yards.
Hill finished with just 74 yards passing.

The Bronco offense marched up the field 99 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter thanks to a stand on the goal line by the Bronco defense.

“Whenever you can make a stop on fourth and inches, that’s going to be big in any kind of game,” safety Jeron Johnson said.

Originally, it was not clear if the O-line would come together for BSU. The first quarter was sluggish, but when things began to gel the offense came out with a bang.

The running game was loaded as well, with nine Broncos credited for 246 yards. The newly formed line was a focus of many critics. Nearly 600 yards of offense has them biting their tongues.

“I think that they did a nice job,” BSU head coach Chris Petersen said. “Kellen had enough time to find guys.”
Big plays defined the match-up Saturday. BSU’s next opponent, Bowling Green, upset No. 25 Pitt 27-17 Saturday as well and displayed their ability to come with big plays.

The Falcons will need to fly above 254 total yards to penetrate a potent Bronco defense.

In somebody else’s house.

In front of a capacity crowd.

BSU squares off against Bowling Green Saturday, Sept. 13 at Bronco Stadium in a game which should display big plays at their finest.
