All good things take time. That was true for the Boise State Broncos Saturday night.
It took a little time for the Broncos to get things started, but once they did, they didn’t disappoint. They beat up on the Bengal’s 49 to 7 to win their season opener.
“We had to come out and set a tone for the season,” safety Jeron Johnson said.
The Broncos first score of the game didn’t come till 13 minutes and 46 seconds into the first quarter on a nice drive which featured four straight complete passes by freshman quarterback Kellen Moore. The drive was capped off by junior tight end Richie Brockel pounding the ball over the line for a 2-yard run to put the Broncos up 7-0.
Brockel finished the game with five yards and two touchdowns.
“Richie is such an unsung hero,” Head Coach Chris Petersen said. “He’s one of those guys who’d never think about asking for the football. He s a big old strong powerful guy.”
Things started to really click and come together for the BSU offense in the second quarter with a myriad of touchdowns.
Senior Ian Johnson opened the flood gates with a 3-yard TD run to the left, that was followed shortly by a one play long bomb from Moore to sophomore wide receiver Titus Young that resulted in a 80-yard touchdown to make it 21-0.
“Making big plays is part of what I like to do for this team,” Young said.
He finished the game with 142 yards and one touchdown as well as 34 rushing yards and a rushing TD as well.
“When you have a one play drive, it gets you going.,” Moore said of the 80-yard play.
Moore finished the game with 14-of-19 for 274 yards and two touchdowns in a little over two and a half quarters of action.
The last score of the quarter for the Broncos came from Brockel, as he rushed over the right guard for 3-yards to put BSU up 28-0.
ISU was finally able to make a little noise late in the first half as they put together a six minute and 36 second drive that ended in a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Clint Knickrehm.
That would be the Bengal’s only score of the night.
The second half was almost all blue and orange. The defense didn’t allow a single point and had constant pressure on Bengal quarterback and Boise native Russel Hill.
Sophomore Derrell Acrey led the Broncos with 14 tackles followed by freshman Aaron Tevis who had 8 and two sacks.
The second half was also highlighted by a third quarter fourth and inches goal line stop by the Bronco defense.
“I thought it was awesome,” Petersen said of the stop.
Freshman wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker jumped into the action as well in the second half, as he recorded two touchdowns.
One 56 yard pass from Moore in the third quarter and a 17-yard pass from senior quarterback Bush Hamdan in the fourth.
The Broncos have the next week off as they prepare for Bowling Green on September 13 at 6 p.m. which will be their homecoming game as well.
