The beginning of the school year is here and the decision of whether we decide to embrace it with open arms or not is up to us.
I for one am clearly torn. Summer seems to have disappeared before my eyes and I am longing for some extra zzz’s.
However, what does have me excited and a little anxious for school this year is the start of Bronco sports.
This fall is definitely something sports fans can enjoy and look forward to. The women’s soccer team, a program that normally flies under the radar, comes off one of their best seasons yet, and they return arguably one of the top players in the NCAA, sophomore Shannon Saxton.
Along with women’s soccer, the women’s volleyball team is due to have a breakout season. After a less than stellar season last year, the team is healthy and has senior leadership along with some young talent that should guide them to a winning and productive season.
The other program that will create some noise this fall is the cross-country team. The women’s team returns Bre Sande, who was the Western Athletic Conference women’s cross-country athlete of the year last season. Also returning with Sande on the women’s side are sophomores Karleigh Gempler and Carly Gerard who should contribute big after both of them had a great track season last spring.
Sophomores Sawyer Bosch and Kevin Higgs, who had breakout seasons as freshmen last year, will lead the men’s side.
The only question that remains for the team in whole is that of coaching. This season a new head coach will lead them, which will be their third coach in three years.
The last sport that most fans have been counting the months, days and hours for is football.
After a disappointing end to an average season for the Broncos, the team looks to restore their tradition of blue-collar style play and playing with a chip on their shoulder.
One of the aspects that makes this season so exciting is all of the dimensions that the Broncos will have.
They have a brand new starting quarterback in Kellen Moore, the first freshman to start since 1997’s Bart Hendricks.
The running backs and wide receivers for Boise State could perhaps be the best group, talent wise, that Boise State has ever seen. If that doesn’t excite you as an avid Bronco football fan, then I don’t know what does.
All in all, this should be one incredible fall for all the sports team. As traditions get renewed and restored, and as some squads look to defy skeptics, fans should gear up for one amazing ride.
If you’ve never been to sports games before, or only go to the football games, I encourage you to go out and attend a soccer game or volleyball match this year. You might be surprised at how good they are, and how much fun you’ll have.
