Idaho Stampede to hold open tryouts

The Idaho Stampede announced they will host two open player tryouts for the upcoming season. The first will be held in Toronto, Canada Oct. 5-6 at Humber College. Tryouts start at 6 p.m. Oct. 5. The second open player tryout is Oct. 25-26 at the Stampede practice facility, the Boys and Girls Club of Garden City. The tryout will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, in the main gym at 610 E. 42nd St. in Boise.

Open tryouts offer athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of Stampede coaching staff, including head coach Bryan Gates. Players will compete to earn an invitation to the Stampede’s official training camp, which is scheduled to begin Nov. 14.

During the 2007-08 open player tryouts, both Ernest Scott and Jason Ellis earned a spot on the Stampede roster. Scott played in 40 games with the Stampede, averaging 7.9 points per game and 3.5 rebounds.

Ellis, a former Boise State standout, played in 37 games averaging 5.4 points per game and 5.1 rebounds.

“This is such an invaluable opportunity for our team,” Gates said. “It is the perfect way to fill our roster for the upcoming season.”

Applicants must be eligible to play in the NBA Development League and may pre-register by submitting the official registration, disclosure and release forms, along with a $200 fee. Payments may be made in the form of cash, cashier’s check or credit card.

Registration forms and waivers are available at idahostampede.com or the Idaho Stampede office, located at 233 S. Capitol Blvd., Suite 100 in Boise.

Hawks to host toy drive at Memorial Stadium

Friday, Aug. 29 the Boise Hawks and the Garden City Police and Fire Department will team up for a toy drive at Memorial Stadium. Toys ranging from Legos, trucks, puzzles, dolls, bikes, games, etc. will be accepted.

All the toys will be collected and given to children who are less fortunate during the Christmas season. The Garden City Police and Fire Department adopts 10 families during the holiday season and every child, as well as hundreds of other kids.

“It’s just an excellent opportunity for us to give back to the community that’s so good to us,” Hawks President/GM Todd Rahr said. “This is a small thing we do, but for the kids that receive a present this Christmas, it can mean everything.”
