Club and intramural sports offer a variety of activities to suit multiple interests.
“Students really enjoy being a part of [an activity] and being a part of that structure,”Alain Rodrique, assistant director of Intramural and Club Sports, said. “It is something to look forward to.”
Some sports have moved beyond the club level.
“You have seen that with women’s soccer being added,” Rodrique said. “[And] women’s softball. Now there is talk of women’s lacrosse being added.”
Women’s softball will begin its inaugural season in the spring of 2009.
Rodrique was careful to mention that club sports are not a stepping-stone for varsity sports, but the result of a successful program that has generated a large interest. Many club organizations do, however, require that students maintain a level of academic success to participate. They facilitate strong performance in and out of the classroom.
“There is talk about women’s rugby, women’s ice hockey and talk about women’s water polo,” Rodrique said.
Club sports include baseball, women’s softball and men’s and women’s lacrosse. Some of the lesser know sports are the Sixxes (Boise State women’s football team), triathlon, men’s rugby and cycling.
One of the first proceedings to kick off the intramural season is coined Toilet Bowl. Participants compete in self-organized teams for the event.
“They come together for that event,” Rodrique said. “Next thing you know they are together for the next four years.”
The Toilet Bowl is a flag football tournament held Monday, Sept. 8 during Boise State’s homecoming week.
