The blaze that destroyed nine southeast Boise homes last night also claimed the life of Boise State linguistics professor Mary Ellen Ryder, who lived in one of the nine homes destroyed in the fire. A tentative identification has been made by the coroner’s office. We are awaiting final confirmation.
Ryder was beginning her 20th year of teaching this fall as an associate professor in the Department of English, teaching courses in linguistics.
“She was one of my favorite professors at BSU,” Boise State student Brad Kelly, a senior in English who took Linguistics 305 from Ryder, said. “She took a subject that was boring and dull to some students and made it interesting and exciting.”
President Kustra released a statement on Ryder’s passing. “On behalf of the students, staff, and faculty, I am deeply saddened by the apparent loss of a long-time Boise State University professor in the tragic fire in southeast Boise last night,” Kustra said.
“As a teacher, she has spread the joy of learning and discovery to countless students. She will be missed as a vital member of our campus community. Our thoughts are with her husband, Peter, and their families and friends.”
