The Boise State offense got back to its original form in their second scrimmage this fall. The defense played without first team players Kyle Wilson and safety Jeron Johnson, which gave the offense a chance to put up big numbers.
Every quarterback that played in the scrimmage either threw or ran for a touchdown making the tight quarterback race seem even tighter at the end of the day.
After Head Coach Chris Petersen said the Broncos lacked energy and enthusiasm during Monday’s scrimmage, the Broncos came out firing.
The offense was able to get into the end zone on seven different occasions, and at times seemed almost unstoppable. The coaches were able to get a great look at the wide receivers as well, with 18 different players having at least one catch in Friday’s scrimmage. Senior Vinny Perretta caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Bush Hamdan on the opening drive of the scrimmage and a few drives later, Hamdan hooked up with Perretta again for a 30-yard touchdown.
“The leader of the wide receivers is Vinny Perretta, being a senior and coming back from adversity last year,” sophomore wide receiver Titus Young said. “He keeps us focused and pumped up on the sidelines too.”
With Ian Johnson not dressing because the coaches chose to rest him, the other running backs got their chance to work out with the first team offense. Sophomore Jeremy Avery led all tailbacks with 55 yards and a nice 14-yard touchdown run.
With everyone on offense making plays, the focus of the scrimmage was still on the quarterbacks. With the hopes of having a QB emerge for the opener against Idaho State, all anyone saw Saturday was the race get even tighter than before.
Hamdan threw for three touchdown passes with one interception, leading the Bronco offense to a touchdown on their opening drive and setting the tempo for the rest of the scrimmage. Hamdan went 9 of 14 for 214 yards accumulating an efficiency rating of 249.10.
“There is a lot of pressure on us right now, you have to make the best of the few opportunities you get in these scrimmages,” Hamdan said. “It also makes it pretty fun when things are going well too.”
After Hamdan’s opening touchdown drive, freshmen Kellen Moore answered right back with a 70-yard drive ending with a 14-yard run by Avery.
Moore ended the scrimmage going 13 of 21 for 159 yards passing with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Childs and one interception. These stats give him a quarterback rating of 131.68.
“In the end of the day it’s about who was more efficient and who made less mistakes,” Moore said. “The coaches will make the right decision, you can trust them to do what’s best for the team and lead us to another WAC Championship.”
Michael Coughlin went 7 of 11 for 108 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while walk-on Drew Hawkins did well going 8 of 9 for 75 yards with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Shoemaker. Nick Lomax was 11 of 19 for 100 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Broncos will have one final scrimmage Friday, which will be closed to the public.
