Broncos less than stellar in first scrimmage

The Boise State Broncos first scrimmage this season on the blue was missing something. Whether it was the lack of intensity, the numerous dropped passes or the average performances by the quarterbacks, the first scrimmage was definitely that; the first one of the season.

“I felt that as a team our energy wasn’t where it needed to be. That’s all on the coaches, on the older guys, the juniors and seniors. They need to step it up and have more leadership,” said senior wide receiver Tanyon Bissell.

The first series of downs, which was led by senior Bush Hamdan, was productive as he connected on few short passes as well as some nice runs by senior Ian Johnson, which ended in a field goal by sophomore Kyle Brotzman.

However, it was the defense early on that really shinned, as they didn’t allow a touchdown on the first couple of series and had only one turnover for the entire scrimmage.

“Defense was good,” said sophomore Derrell Acrey. “Missed tackles. We need to work on that. As a first scrimmage, that is usually a key point.”

As far as the quarterback battle panned out, both Hamdan and freshman Kellen Moore were the only two who wore white jerseys, which allowed them to take hits by the defense. The other three QB’s wore the red jerseys for the entire scrimmage.

“You can always say that it is early [on his execution]. You know that you are going to make mistakes. You just got to bounce back,” Moore said.

In the scrimmage the offense was only able to produce two touchdowns. A 51-yard play between Moore and senior wide receiver Vinny Perretta and a 1-yard run up the middle by Johnson.

Moore said he felt like he’s made a couple steps forward.

“It will all be about watching film tomorrow and watching how we do.”

The Broncos will be back in action Saturday night at 7p.m. on the blue for their second scrimmage of the season. This is the second to last scrimmage of the summer for the team and the last one open to the public.
