With fall football less than a month away, the Boise State University Broncos were able to take a little break Saturday night and play some softball.
On July 12, the Broncos traded their pads in place of bats, as they played host to the first annual Boise State Offense vs. Defense Charity Softball game at Hawks Memorial Stadium. All of the proceeds went toward the First Tee of Idaho.
“I think it was important for us. I think from a standpoint of unity of our team, obviously it’s good for us to go out and do something that we put on, and you know I think [the] guys were excited for the first time,” senior quarterback and Organizer of the event Bush Hamdan said.
The event, which featured a majority of the football team participating and former Broncos Ryan Clady, Jared Zabransky and Derek Schouman serving as coaches, was a lighthearted affair with the offense squeaking out a 19-17 victory over the defense.
“I thought it was a pretty good game, I thought everybody shined on both sides … it could have gone anyway,” Hamdan said.
“Most of the time we compete is usually in football, so it’s always nice to get different sports like bowling and baseball,” junior linebacker Derrell Acrey said.
Before the game Saturday, the team participated in a home run derby. The team of Hamdan, seniors Vinny Perretta and Tanyon Bissell took home the title.
After the game, Hamdan said this sort of event is something he would like to see continued for years to come.
I hope these young guys realize how important it is to give back to the community and just have fun outside of football,” Hamdan said.
“This was a great event for us, a great way to give back to the community. It was great opportunity,” Acrey said.
