Gene Bleymaier wins regional Athletic Director of the Year Award

Gene Bleymaier, director of athletics at Boise State University, will be honored Tuesday, June 10 at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics 43rd annual convention when he is named the 2007-08 AstroTurf Athletics Director of the Year “Football Bowl Subdivision West” Region winner.

In his 27th year guiding the Bronco athletic department, Bleymaier will receive the honor during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

Bleymaier joined Boise State’s Athletic Department in 1981 and became the Broncos’ Director of Athletics in February 1982, winning a total of 86 league championships over nearly three decades.

Since joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) at the start of the 2001-02 athletic season, Boise State has won 18 league titles. Among those conference crowns were five consecutive football championships from 2002 to 2006.

Bronco gymnastics and women’s tennis add to their rosters

The Boise State gymnastics program, led by Co-Head Coaches Tina Bird and Neil Resnick, is pleased to announce the signing of a National Letter of Intent by Fiona Leslie. The New York City native plans to join the Broncos for the 2008-09 season as a freshman.

A highly competitive club gymnast, Leslie competed for the Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Team based in New York. There she began her career at age 12 and competed as an all-around athlete under head coach Ann Kist.

A two-year Level 10 competitor, Leslie recently earned the title of the 2008 Region 6 All-Around Champion with a score of 37.075. In the same competition she snagged first place finishes on bars (9.575) and beam (9.20) and finished second on floor (9.525). She also placed 19th in the all-around at the 2008 Junior Olympic National Championships with a score of 37.250. There she had an excellent performance on bars, earning her a score of 9.625 and an eighth place tie.

“We initially recruited her for beam and floor,” Resnick said. “Her bars have gotten better though, and after her performance at J.O.’s she will most likely be competing on bars next season too.”

On the other side, the women’s tennis team added two players to their roster: Vivien Silvany and Rocio Frej.

The pair of newcomers will join a group of six athletes who will return from the

2007-08 roster.

The 2008-09 roster looks to be full of diversity, with seven of the eight women attending Boise State from foreign countries. The two newly signed women add to the foreign student-athlete group with Silvany hailing from Palambang, Indonesia and Frej coming from Zaragoza, Spain.
