The other side of the global warming debate is one of negation. Christopher C. Horner, author of “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming,” represents this side.
Horner presented his lecture (sponsored by the College Republicans) titled, “A Dose of Sobriety About ‘Global Warming’ Alarmism,” Tuesday, May 6 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom.
Horner believes that global warming is not a crisis but is merely a temporary climate shift that will correct itself.
“[The Earth's] temperature relates to the sun,” Horner said.
Surface temperature stations around the world measure the heat put off by the sun. Horner showed pictures of temperature stations located next to asphalt, barbeque pits, airplane runways and train stations. These pictures illustrate that some measuring units are put in places that are unusually hot.
Additionally, not all of the world’s surface stations are up and running. In the early 1990s many stations in cooler areas, such as Siberia and Canada, were shut down. Since then there has been a dramatic increase in hot surface temperature readings. Horner said there is a direct correlation.
“Want to cool the planet?” Horner asked. “Reopen the Siberian stations.”
This “alarmism” costs the United States taxpayers $6 billion in climate research. AIDS research only costs $3.7 billion in comparison.
“These are very expensive guesses,” Horner said.
Horner asked the audience to look back at the cooling change that occurred in the 1970s and the warming period that occurred before it. He believes that global warming is simply alarmism and exaggeration; it is not a trend but a shift in weather.
“Just open your eyes and your mind,” Horner said.
Horner’s facts against global warming
The United Nations claims to have 2,500 of the world’s leading climate scientists. This group consists of economists, chemists, engineers, modelers and other professionals that are not actual climatologists.
According to Horner, the head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change admits that the climatic warming shift has ended.
