They are ready for this.
The Boise State women’s tennis team will head to Las Cruces, N.M. this weekend to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The Broncos have had a solid year, finishing the regular season 18-5.
The year started a little rocky with a record of 5-4, but the squad pulled through and won 11 consecutive matches.
“The girls had a lot of fight and showed a lot of resiliency,” Head Coach Mark Tichenor said.
Finishing the season at No. 40 nationally, BSU heads into this weekend with high hopes for the WAC Championships.
BSU will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament this year, which is hosted by New Mexico State.
Last year the Broncos hosted the tournament at the Appleton Tennis Center. They fell in the championship round to Fresno State for the second year in a row, which gave the Bulldogs their seventh consecutive WAC title.
The Bronco squad will seek a different end to the tournament this year and capture its first ever WAC championship this weekend.
Tichenor is optimistic about his team’s chances at the Championships.
“We feel good,” Tichenor said.
The Broncos finished the year with a win on the road against University of Nevada, giving them a little momentum heading into the tournament.
“We are very excited,” senior Polina Kokoulina said.
She was also very happy with the way the team played last week against the Wolf Pack.
“Beating [Nevada] in a good match helps our confidence,” Kokoulina said.
It’ll be a tough battle through the Western Athletic Conference bracket because it seems that every team is playing well. It will not be an easy task for the Bronco ladies to bring home some hardware.
“It’s what everyone comes to Boise State for, to win a championship,” Tichenor said.
The bracket is set, the sun is shining and the women are ready to play. Looking to change the routine of the past, the Broncos will look to hold the WAC Championship trophy up high this time when it’s called game, set and match.
All live stats for the WAC Women’s Tennis Championships will be available on the New Mexico State athletic Website.
