The Associated Students of Boise State University Senate voiced its support for ASBSU Vice President Jessica Martin at its Tuesday meeting in the Student Union Forum.
Last Thursday, Sen. At-Large Gabe Murphy informed the Senate that it never confirmed President Mark Getecha’s selection of Martin.
“There is no question that Vice President Martin has done a great job as vice president,” Murphy said.
Murphy co-sponsored Senate Resolution Number 9-2008, which stated Martin has done an exceptional job as vice president.
“I don’t think it was meant to be a personal attack on her,” Sen. Joel Henretty said.
He stressed that Senate’s failure to confirm Martin was a simple oversight and had nothing to do with her performance.
Five senators asked to be added as sponsors of the resolution, which was originally sponsored by Murphy, Sen. Evan Meriwether, Sen. Seren Horton, Sen. Chad Davis, Sen. Alex Dorofeev and Sen. Angelica Garcia.
The Senate fast-tracked the legislation to Second Reading and then immediately to Third Reading.
Meriwether moved to vote on the resolution, which passed unanimously.
Sen. Murphy also introduced Senate Bill Number 32-2008, which allocates $2,000 from the ASBSU Contingency Fund to bring author Christopher Horner to Boise State. Horner is best known for his alternative approach to climate change and the global warming theory.
“I think it’s just very interesting to see different perspectives of an important issue,” Murphy said.
The bill moved to second and third reading of legislation, where the Senate unanimously passed it.
Horner will visit Boise State either sometime at the end of April, or during Earth Week.
Senate Bill Number 33-2008, chiefly sponsored by Henretty, would allocate $3,000 from the ASBSU Contingency to send Boise State students to the Model United Nations Conference in New York City. The bill would help ease the cost of lodging for participating students.
The bill stated that the “conference is attended by 3,400 college students, 48 percent of whom live outside the United States.” Henretty said, in light of President Bob Kustra’s call for an internationalization of the Boise State campus, that the bill will benefit the university, as well as the participating students.
“They’ve proven that they’ve put a lot of energy into this,” Henretty said. “They’re not just going for a fun trip to New York.”
The Senate voted to send the bill to the Budget and Finance Committee for further consideration.
The ASBSU Senate meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. in the SUB Forum. Students can address the Senate during the Gallery Comments section of the meeting.
