In front of a sellout crowd of 5,075, Saturday night, the Idaho Steelheads did what they needed to do to attempt to grab the number one seed for the ECHL playoffs.
Not helping Idaho, however, was the Alaska Aces, who needed a win in regulation to move the Steelies into that No. 1 seed.
Idaho will carry the momentum of a 5-1 win Friday night and a two goal rally late in the 3rd period in Saturday nights game, winning 2-1 in regulation.
Unlike the previous night, a different Fresno Falcons showed up at Qwest arena for Saturday night’s game, holding the Steelheads to a scoreless night into the 3rd period. Shots-on-goal was also a close numbers game with both teams at 17 to start the third.
Steelheads forward, Taggart Desmet, had a chance to put the home team up with a penalty shot with 15:54 left in the game, but with a fake to the left the opportunity was missed.
A few minutes later, however, Taggart was assisted by Mark Bombersback at the 12:49 mark, giving Desmet his 28 goal of the year.
But the celebration of the lead was to be short-lived when Fresno put one between the pipes on a power play goal during the 11 minute of the last period, which led to an all on ice personnel scuffle that only seem to fire up the Steelheads.
In the 17 minute and Fresno leading the shots-on-goal- category by one, Mark Bombersback rocketed the puck to the back of the net on a 3-on-2 break away, assisted by Taggart Desmet and Jeremy Sherlinck, giving Idaho its second lead of the night and the go-ahead goal for the win.
Penalties on Marty Flichel and Lance Galbraith in the final seconds of the game left the Steelheads with only 3 defensemen to hold off the Fresno Falcons from their attempt to send the game into overtime.
Idaho will start their defending 2007 Kelly Cup playoff run this Wednesday night against No. 5 Alaska Aces at home in the Qwest arena, 7:10 p.m.
