The final number was 322. That’s how many runners crossed the finish line before Boise State Head Football Coach Chris Petersen in the first Beat Pete 5K charity run, Saturday.
“The 14 hours of sleep and the pancake carbo-loading didn’t really work like I thought it would work,” Petersen said. “I feel good. It’s such a good cause.”
The cause is helping fund BSU student scholarships.
The race, which started at the Campus Recreation Center, ran along the green belt and finished up back and the Rec, was set up so that every runner that finished ahead of Coach Pete would earn $5 of Petersen’s own money that will go to the scholarship program. Winners also received an “I Beat Pete” T-shirt.
What drew a lot of the participants out for the race was the lure of being able to say that they beat Pete.
“We just came to beat Pete,” former BSU track and cross country member Ty Axman said. “This was an opportunity to get a run in and it felt like I was doing something for a good cause.”
“When I passed him, just right off of the get go, I was like ‘OK don’t let him come up behind me now,’” BSU graduate student Angie Gribble said. “It was a good feeling.”
Another positive of the event was the turnout.
Nearly 1,000 people came out to take part in the race and the fun atmosphere.
“I think this is awesome,” Gribble said. “I wasn’t expecting this kind of a turnout so it’s a great support and I think it’s fun for the Athletic Department to see them out here doing something else than being on the football field. I like it.”
With such a good showing this year, Petersen and the other racers all agree they would like to see Beat Pete become an annual event.
“I would like to get all of our coaches involved in this type of stuff, all the sports,” Petersen said. “Hopefully this thing just continues to grow and helps out our awesome students who go here."
