The Arbiter, like many student organizations on the Boise State campus, re-hires its whole staff once a year. The first positions to be filled are those of Editor-in-Chief and Business Manager. These student positions oversee the day-to-day operations of The Arbiter and its staff of about 80 student employees. The Publications Board oversees this hiring process.

The board is comprised of The Arbiter’s General Manager Brad Arendt, its Faculty Advisor Dan Morris, representatives from the Boise State administration and student body, members of Boise’s journalism community and staff members from The Arbiter.

In early March, the Publications Board selected Assistant Opinion Editor Shannon Morgan as Editor-in-Chief for the 2008/2009 school year. The board also appointed Bookkeeper Lindsey Wright to the position of Business Manager.

Morgan, a sophomore and mother of two, has worked for The Arbiter for two years. She has written for the News, Opinion and Culture sections, worked on seven different podcast shows, dabbled in video and photography and has served as Advertising Coordinator and Assistant Opinion Editor.

Morgan said she decided to apply for Editor-in-Chief because she wanted to give back to The Arbiter and its staff.

“When I started college, I was going through a divorce with two children, and was terrified and unsure of myself and what I was going to do with my life,” Morgan said. “The Arbiter found me and became more than a job, but a support network and a family. I knew that one day I wanted to give back to this newspaper and everything it has given me. As Editor-in-Chief, I plan to do just that.”

Morgan has also held a number of positions on the Boise State campus, including Chief of Staff for the Associated Students of Boise State University.

She currently serves on the Accreditation Review Committee, the Veteran’s Day Celebration Committee and the board for Boise State’s new student lecture series, Vox Discipuli.

Morgan stated that her goal is to prepare staff members to enter a workforce of increasing multimedia journalism.

“The way people consume media is changing at a rapid pace. I plan to ensure journalists at The Arbiter are fully functional multimedia journalists, so that we can keep up,” Morgan said. “We have a ways to go before we are the media outlet I know we can be.”

Wright has worked for The Arbiter for two years, and also served as Secretary of Finances for ASBSU. As Business Manager, Wright will oversee advertising, production and distribution of the paper. She said that she hoped the practical experience of running a business would coincide with learning in the classroom.

“I want to put a lot of emphasis on the marketing of The Arbiter,” Wright said. ” I want The Arbiter to be seen on campus so that the students will pick it up and read the paper.”

Current Editor-in-Chief Dustin Lapray and current Business Manager Troy Sawyer will finish out the semester before Morgan and Wright take over.

“I want students to know that we are here to serve as their voice,” Morgan said. “I’m very interested in receiving feedback from students on what they like about The Arbiter, what they don’t like about The Arbiter and what we can do to better serve them."
