The Idaho Steelheads showed well during their last home stand, March 19-22, with a three game sweep over the Stockton Thunder. Wednesday night’s game got off to a slow start but the first goal scored by John Lammers late in the second period and assisted by Darrel Hay instantly got the crowd to its feet. There was only 2:45 left in the period before they went into the second intermission, but the powerplay goal came at a very timely point since it was the only goal scored all game.
Wednesday was also the opener for ‘Pink in the Rink’; a fundraiser in conjunction with St. Luke’s to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. Two of the team’s jerseys that were being auctioned off had already sold out right at $2000.
Friday’s game was a back and forth match but the Steelheads came out as the victor. Flichel was the first to score, but the Thunder came back to tie the score 1-1 only a few minutes later. Lammers scored again with only two minutes remaining with help from Lance Galbraith and Taggart Desmet. Sinclair’s goal in the third period gave the steelheads the ultimate advantage over the Thunder to take home the second victory this past weekend.
A penalty shot from Galbraith in the first period gave the Steelheads the jumpstart to the game on Saturday night. He took full advantage of this opportunity by putting the puck in the back of the net. A few short weeks ago Galbraith wasn’t as lucky when given the same one-on-one action.
Stockton goalie Glen Fisher shutdown Galbraith’s penalty shot when the Steelheads were in Stockton, but this time Fisher wasn’t as lucky. Qwest arena’s sold-out crowd was on their feet again, with very good reason. Taggart Desmet scored another goal with less than five seconds in the first period. Last but not least, Colin Sinclair added one more notch to the scoreboard in the third period, giving the steelheads a 3-0 shutout.
Briggs was the main man on Wednesday and Friday, but newcomer Matt Zaba took charge on Saturday. Both players helped the team to a 37-22-9 record this season.
The Steelheads hit the road this past weekend, traveling to Stockton on Friday and Fresno on Saturday. Idaho beat the Thunder 4-3, and lost to Fresno 3-4.
