For five years now, the Boise State gymnastics team has been led by senior co-captain Lindsay Ward.
This season a freshman, Hannah Redmon, will take over the reigns and help the Broncos continue paving the way to greatness.
The Broncos earned their first Western Athletic Conference title Saturday night.
All but one of the events were won either by Redmon or Ward.
Redmon took home more awards than anyone else, placing first on vault (9.875), co-champion of the floor exercise (9.925) and the champion in all-around competition (39.225).
She was also named WAC Freshman of the Year and WAC Gymnast of the Year.
This season has been nothing short of an elevator ride up for the first-year collegiate athlete.Redmon followed her head coach, Neil Resnick, to Boise from her gymnastics club, Flips USA in Reno, Nev.
“What a privilege to take her up into adulthood,” Resnick said. “And now to watch her, as a young adult continue to improve. It’s a wonderful experience.”
Redmon played a large role in the Broncos’ success this season.
She was named WAC Gymnast of the Week five times during the 2008 season.
“It’s not over yet,” Redmon said. “We just need to get back into the gym and get ready for the NCAA’s.”
The move to the regional championships will be a new endeavor for the young champion.
The veteran presence of the only BSU senior, Ward, will be crucial with the young team.
Ward snagged the uneven bars title (9.875).
She was followed by Redmon, who shared a spot as runner-up with Southern Utah University’s Kellie Dangerfield (9.800).
The success is nothing new to Ward – she was the WAC Specialist of the Week three times in the 2008 season.
The co-captain will prepare to extend her season at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships Western Regionals beginning April 12. She will help gear the team’s focus on the balance beam, where the Broncos struggled Saturday.
With as many as two meetings left, Ward will pass the torch after an impressive career at BSU.
“I haven’t won since my freshman year,” Ward said. “To win during my last year, it was amazing.”
The dynamic BSU duo will combine the wisdom of a veteran collegiate athlete and the enthusiasm of a young star.
This is just the first chapter that is likely to become the “Redmon Era” for Boise State gymnastics.
“Hannah is just going to get better,” Resnick said. “If she has lacked anything in the past, it has been more of the finite things. The form. The alignment. I think that she is just going to keep on growing."
