The Alpha Xi Delta sorority wants Treasure Valley kids to get their nose in a book.

The Boise State sorority will be holding a children’s book drive Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4 on the Quad from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The sorority is also collecting money from those who wish to contribute, but do not have books to give.

There will be designated book drop-off locations near the Multi-Purpose Building and the Student Union Building.

Members of the sorority will be passing out flyers in these areas Wednesday, April 2.

Alpha Xi is specifically requesting that children’s books be donated, and that any books donated be in decent shape.

“We want to get as many books as possible,” Alpha Xi Delta President Callie Wiskus said. “All books donated will go to under funded elementary [schools] in the Boise area.”

The sorority doesn’t yet know which elementary schools will receive assistance.

In the past, Alpha Xi has fundraised for such diverse charities as the Ronald McDonald House, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center and the Special Olympics.

The sorority also organizes the Quarters in the Quad event each spring. This year, Alpha Xi wanted to focus its fundraising efforts on Choose Children, the sorority’s national philanthropy program for 2008.

Last year, the sorority raised more than $600 for the Ronald McDonald house organization, and it’s hoping to surpass that amount in books this year.

“Any effort will be greatly appreciated,” Philanthropy Chairwoman Kayla Caldwell said.
