Senate helps finance visit from Latin American scholar

The Associate Students of Boise State University passed a bill Thursday that will bring a renowned Latin American scholar to Boise State.
Senate Bill Number 22-2008 allocated $1,000 to help finance a lecture from assistant professor at Princeton University, Gabriela Nouzeilles.
The legislation, sponsored by College of Health Sciences Sen. Angelica Garcia, College of Engineering Sen. Mariah Fowler and Sen. at-Large Evan Meriwether, was introduced at the Senate’s Tuesday, Feb. 19 meeting.
The Senate heard several guests speak in support of the bill. Garcia said that most guest speakers ask for more than $1,000. Lecturers often charge $3,000 to $10,000 per engagement.
Garcia, Fowler and Meriwether created the legislation because of petitions from the Spanish Club and the Department of Modern Languages and Literature.
According to Senate guest and assistant professor of Modern Languages Adrian Kane, Nouzeilles is an internationally-renowned expert in the field of modern Latin American literature.
She published three books and many scholarly articles on Latin American fiction.
“[Dr. Nouzeilles' visit] would present a unique genre of art and cultural contact with a region that is not typically available to the citizens of Idaho,” Kane said.
The Senate’s contributions will add to money already set aside in the Department of Modern Languages and Literature. The combined funds will pay for Dr. Nouzeilles’ airfare, hotel and travel expenses. In addition, the funds will pay for refreshments offered after Dr. Nouzeilles’ reception.
“Boise State has a large base of Hispanic students and student interest in Spanish. Spanish classes are easily filled within two weeks, and upper level classes get full even more quickly,” Garcia said. “I think this speaker will benefit those students and all students interested in the culture.
Sen. Valerie McCoy, an English major with an emphasis in linguistics, said she approved of Senate Bill Number 22-2008 because it represented her interests.
“I think the lecture will contribute to any student interested in learning about language and literature,” McCoy said. “It gives students the opportunity to expand ideas about literature and language.”
The legislation did not include a date for the lecture, but it will likely happen after Spring Break. For more information on Nouzeilles’ lecture, students can contact the Spanish Club. The ASBSU Senate meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Student Union Forum. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
