Nearing the end of a strong home stand, the Boise State gymnastics team came away with a decisive win to beat the Sacramento State Hornets, 194.025 to 193.450, Friday night.
The win improved the team’s overall record to 7-1, 6-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
With only one home meet remaining before the Broncos begin their grueling March schedule, this win should give the Broncos much needed momentum to finish out the regular season.
BSU will be led by senior captain Lindsay Ward, who tied for first on the uneven bars Friday with a score of 9.850.
She also finished third on balance beam with a score of 9.725.
“We know what we can do,” Ward said. “We do it in the gym everyday, we don’t need to doubt ourselves.”
That was exactly what the Broncos did in beating the Hornets, who were WAC champions last year. Not only were the Broncos able to win for themselves, they were also able to do it in front of 694 fans on Parents’ Night.
“It was nice to see the crowd here, and to do what we did here tonight in front of our parents was really special to all of us,” Ward said. “We know we are amazing and as long as we keep telling ourselves that in and out of meets then we should be fine all year.”
Ward wasn’t the only highlight of the night.
Freshmen Hannah Redmond had an outstanding night as well, winning the all-around.
Redmond was able to do this by winning the vault with a score of 9.825 and the floor exercise with a score of 9.875.
With the addition of Redmond to the team this year, the Broncos have a needed boost in all four events.
Any time a freshmen can make an impact as she does is special, not only for her, but for the entire team.
“We had a short week coming into this meet only having two full days to train,” Redmond said. “Everyone was a little nervous about the fact that we didn’t have the preparation that we’ve had for our other meets, but I felt we did really good considering the short week we had.”
Redmond was not the only freshmen making an impact.
Fellow freshmen, Amy Glass tied for second with Sacramento State’s Alicia Chan, scoring 9.755 to give them a much needed boost on the vault.
Taylor Jacob tied for first with Lindsay Ward on the uneven bars with a score of 9.850.
Jacob’s score helped the Broncos complete a sweep of the uneven bars competition along with Redmond’s score of 9.750.
The Broncos were also able to sweep the floor exercise.
Redmond finished first with a score of 9.875, Sarah Smith finished second with a score of 9.850 and Yvette Leizorek finished third with a score of 9.825.
If there was one spot where the Broncos didn’t shine, it was on the balance beam, where the highest finisher for the Broncos was Lindsay Ward, who scored a 9.725.
Sacramento State was able to come out with a win on the balance beam. Marina Borisova and Melissa Genovese tied for first place with scores of 9.825 each.
Now the Broncos are left with one more home meet on Feb. 29 at Taco Bell Arena against Southern Utah (who had beaten the Broncos earlier in the year) and Seattle Pacific.
There is no doubt that winning their last home meet before their tough road schedule will help the Broncos immensely.
The Broncos hope to gain the momentum they need to get wins on the road.
“Just being home and having our fans here tonight really helped us,” Co-Head Coach Neil Resnick said after Friday’s dual. “We had a lot of kids that were sick and still sore from our last meet. This crowd really backed us and helped get those kids along. Our girls really love performing for Boise’s fans."
