A hearing was held for the proposed changes to tuition and fees for the 2008-09 academic year on Feb. 14.
Tuition is proposed to increase by $75.
The money will be used to fund a new master’s graduate program in the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs; faculty, student advising and infrastructure support; and funding for student graduate assistantships.
The Strategic Facilities Fee is proposed to increase from $165 to $205 per full-time student. These funds would be used to construct new academic space.
“The intent of the Facilities Fee is to complete the master plan,” Vice President of Finance Stacy Pearson said.
The master plan features a complete layout of how Boise State University will look in the future.
The Children’s Center is looking at an increase of $5 per student fee per semester for full-time students, and 35 cents per credit hour for part-time students.
The Children’s Center is designed to provide exceptional care at an affordable cost for the families of BSU students. It currently serves more than 150 families.
“We are one of only 23 programs accredited in Idaho,” Children’s Center Director Hob Boazman said. “We always want to keep our costs at or below what other programs are charging.”
With this increase, students will still receive low-cost service and the opportunity for childcare during school breaks.
Fred Shlapper spoke on behalf of the Heath, Wellness and Counseling Center, which provides medical and psychological services to students.
A purposed increase of $15 per student per semester would be used to fund a financial tech position, an alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) health educator, an experienced psychiatrist and advanced-level psychiatric residents.
Intercollegiate Athletics claims that more funding will promote gender equity.
The Student Union and Student Involvement Fee will be raised by $10 per full time student for next year.
This increase would help cover the costs of the the new Student Union Building, an expanded bookstore, a new dining hall and food court, remodeled games center, new ballroom and new Student Organizations and Student offices.
This portion of fees will also help pay for student activities.
“I care about how the SUB looks, and I look forward to future student involvement,” Brett Berning, secretary of personal recruitment for the Associated Students of BSU, said. “My enthusiasm comes from my experience.”
Presentations concerning general education, the Strategic Facilities Fee, the Children’s Center, the Health, Wellness and Counseling Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Union and Student Involvement, Blue Thunder Marching Band, Scholarships, Campus Recreation and the Cultural Center were all given at the hearing.
