Boise State University announced last week that it set another all-time spring enrollment record.

With a head count of 18,860 students, Boise State had its largest spring-to-spring enrollment increase in five years and the highest spring enrollment record increase for any institute of higher learning in Idaho.

The announcement reflects all of Boise State’s campus locations, and includes both undergraduate and graduate enrollment.

A larger student population helps BSU effectively compete with other universities.

Boise State faculty members are excited about breaking another new record.

“Boise State University is very pleased with its continued planned growth,” Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Laliberte said. “The record increase in the number of students this semester as compared to the previous spring semester is the result of our increased outreach efforts to attract high-achieving students and improved retention of our continuing students.”

Some universities experience a decrease in numbers during the spring, in comparison to fall semester enrollment numbers.

The University of Idaho’s enrollment decreased this spring by 2.3 percent.

This year, spring enrollment indicated little difference between fall enrollment, and a significant increase in numbers from last spring.

This year, 682 more students joined BSU, resulting in a 3.8 percent increase in student population.

The only time this percentage was surpassed was in 2002-03 when enrollment surged by 5.6 percent.

The university graduate college grew the most, with 169 new students.

This is an increase of 8.8 percent from last year.

University Communications and Marketing Director Frank Zang said that the number of graduate students at the university will be a continued area of growth in 2008-2009.

Campus infrastructure has also developed, and the university has tried to use the resources available effectively.

Getting the most use of available classrooms and research labs possible, as well as hiring new faculty members, helps the university match the needs of its students.

“In the last five years, growth in student enrollment goes hand in hand with upgrading admission standards, improved student life and increasing the amount of doctoral programs.

Because of the increasing enrollment, Boise State is working hard to match the needs of students,” Zang said.

In addition, the number of full-time equivalent students at Boise State rose to 13,633, an increase of 688 students compared to last spring’s enrollment.

This increase in full-time students indicates not only fact that the university’s student body has grown, but also those attending Boise State are enrolled in more classes.

“I think [these numbers] reflect the tremendous growth the university is at large experiencing,” Zang said. “Experienced growth is not only in student enrollment, but also in academic programs, construction projects and research ends.”

BSU is continuing its planned growth.

“The record numbers of students this semester are due to these projects."
