Art scam, clever or stupid?

LONDON – Forty-seven-year old Shaun Greenhalgh had no job other than looking after his wheelchair-bound father, George, 84, his mother, Olive, 83, and an elderly aunt. The four slept in the same bedroom.

Few would have guessed that he was channeling Paul Gauguin, Man Ray and Henry Moore into paintings and sculptures that ended up in places like the Art Institute of Chicago and the British Museum.

The London art world is still reeling from the aftershocks of one of the longest-running forgery scams in recent history. It is not quite sure if the very duplicitous Greenhalgh family was diabolically clever or spectacularly stupid.

Police estimate that the Greenhalghs probably earned about $1.6 million from their criminal activities. But despite their wealth, they lived in poverty.

Car bombs kill 45 as U.S. official arrives

BAGHDAD – On a day when the U.S. secretary of defense arrived in Iraq to discuss U.S. troop withdrawals and Iraq’s halting but real political progress, carnage from car bombs and internal battles around the country claimed at least 45 lives.

Pentagon chief Robert Gates arrived unannounced in the Iraq capital Sunday evening for talks with Iraqi leaders and U.S. Commander Gen. David Petraeus and Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, a military spokeswoman confirmed.

A few hours before he landed in Baghdad, a big suicide car bomb exploded near a local market in Yathrib, north of Baghdad in Salahuddin province, killing at least 23 people and injuring 45. The explosion brought down part of the market building and may have trapped shoppers in the rubble, according to police.

Terrorist leader killed in car bomb

DAMASCUS, Syria – A car bomb Tuesday night killed the mastermind behind a quarter-century of spectacular terrorist attacks, including the 1983 bombings of the U.S. Embassy and the Marine barracks in Lebanon. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah accused Israel on Wednesday of staging the assassination.

Imad Mughniyeh was the mastermind behind a quarter-century of high-profile attacks. In addition to the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, and the truck bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks, which killed 241 people, he was indicted in the United States in the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847, which ended with the execution of a U.S. Navy diver.

eBay may face troubles from vendors

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Momentum is growing against eBay’s changes to the fees it charges to sellers and the way it handles feedback, with word of a “strike” against the San Jose online auction company gaining traction.

In January, John Donahue, who becomes eBay’s president and chief executive officer in March, announced changes to the fees eBay charges. The cost to list items will be cut 25 to 50 percent, but the commission that eBay charges for completed sales, what it calls its “final value fee,” will increase.

Besides those fee changes, eBay also said it will hold some PayPal payments for up to 21 days on certain transactions and will prevent sellers from leaving negative feedback comments about buyers.

Pilot flies around the world

WASHINGTON – Barrington Irving officially was honored in front of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday honoring him as the youngest person – and first black – ever recorded to fly solo around the world.

While standing in front of the U.S. House of Representatives, Irving spoke of the inner-city youth in Miami-Dade his journey was meant to inspire.

He announced a new program that will have 60 local high-schoolers build his next single-engine plane.

The resolution, approved unanimously by the House in December, encouraged museums around the country to commemorate Irving’s record-breaking trip.

Beagle wins Westminster

NEW YORK – Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show fans were treated to the baying howl of a beagle victory Tuesday night when Uno became the first pooch in the breed’s history to win the coveted Best in Show title.

Uno – a hound whose official name is K-Run’s Park Me in First – was clearly the crowd favorite at Tuesday’s final event, both because of the century-long losing streak and Uno’s family-friendly demeanor.

Warmer weather brings fear of flooding

A sudden thaw of this winter’s low elevation snowpack could be worrisome for homeowners and renters near smaller creeks and streams, officials say, heightening the need for flood insurance.

The National Weather Service is concerned about the risk as well. Senior hydrologist and meteorologist Jay Breidenbach said that this year in lower elevations – between about 4,000 and 6,000 feet – the Boise foothills and areas around the Treasure Valley have seen snowpack levels “well above average.”

Kustra outlines university’s dymanic growth

Boise State University’s dynamic growth and academic momentum as Idaho’s largest university were the topic of three formal presentations to Idaho lawmakers by President Bob Kustra during the opening weeks of the 2008 Idaho Legislature.

In presentations to the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee and the Education committees in the House and Senate, Kustra outlined Boise State’s continued success in building student achievement, academic and research programs and key infrastructure and buildings, while accommodating Idaho’s largest and fastest growing student body.

Kustra told lawmakers that Mullner’s research is just one of dozens of research projects funded by the $27 million in sponsored project funding Boise State received during fiscal year 2007, a 10 percent increase over 2006 and a 47 percent increase since 2000.
