Whether you’re a lovebird or just on the lookout for one, consider extending your Valentine’s Day celebration into the weekend and kicking up your heels for a good cause.
Boise State’s Model United Nations organization will be hosting a salsa dance party Friday, Feb. 15, in the Student Union Building from 7-9 p.m. The event will include salsa dance instruction, music, dancing and refreshments. The $5 cover charge will be well worth the dance-floor fun and entertainment promised to proceed throughout the night.
The Salsa Dance Party will not only offer students the chance to strut their stuff and mingle with friends in a lively atmosphere, but also to make a difference and offer some much-needed help to a distinguished university organization.
In 1968, the U.S. instituted a new nonprofit, educational program called National Model United Nations.
For 40 years the program has blossomed into a worldwide force that inspires people all over the world to learn how to build a better tomorrow through the ways of democracy.
Every year 4,000 international students gather in New York City for the National Model United Nations Conference. The convention allows the participants to experience democracy and negotiate affairs through a variety of simulations that are modeled after the actions of the actual United Nations.
Individuals from each corner of the globe work to solve a wide variety of world issues, including regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights and environmental concerns. These bright leaders cover the gamut of global controversies and search for the greatest unparalleled solutions.
Many Model United Nations members dream about the opportunity to attend this conference. But as we’ve all experienced from time to time, traveling can be very expensive. This is where the dancing BSU Bronco community comes in. The proceeds from the salsa dance party, and other MUN events to be hosted throughout the semester, will help sponsor 16 students on their trip to New York for the conference.
Busy college students’ hectic schedules and other commitments often inhibit us from allowing our good samaritan light to shine.
Here, students who have a little philanthropist-like yearning to do some good can direct it toward some students who need a supportive hand as they ascend the ladder of international democratic progression.
By attending the MUN event on Friday, students will not only be supporting this BSU organization, but it will also be feeding the 40-year-old fiery ambition of the National Model United Nations. With support, the organization’s goal of educating and making the world a better place will rage on for 40 more years.
If thinking about current world affairs makes you want to dance, then head to the SUB on Friday night. If world affairs do not inspire you to disco, then attend the salsa dance party and do a jive for change. BSU’s local Model United Nations has organized a special event and would appreciate the best turnout possible. Again, instruction will be offered, so even salsa-novices are not excused from participating.
Put on your dancing shoes and cut a rug Friday.
