Gibson, a sophomore guard, hit four 3-point shots and went 8-for-14 from the field to surpass his previous high of 22 points.
NMSU’s bench contributed 23 points in the first half en route to a 54-37 halftime lead.
It marked the fifth time this season that the Aggies have scored at least 50 points in the opening half.
Nelson receives academic honors
Matt Nelson, the starting center on the Boise State University men’s basketball team, has been named to the first team of the “ESPN the Magazine” Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
A senior from Issaquah, Wash., Nelson graduated from BSU last December with a 3.52 grade point average in business. He is currently enrolled in the graduate program at BSU. As a first team member from district eight, Nelson will now advance to the national All-America ballot.
Nelson is second on the team in scoring with a 15.8 points-per-game average. Nelson leads the Broncos in field goal percentage, making 138 of 209 attempts for 66.0 percent, which also ranks him fourth nationally. He also second on team in rebounds averaging 7.7 per-game.
Since transferring from Eastern Washington University following his sophomore season, Nelson has started every game for BSU the past two years (53). Twice this season he was named the Player of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference.
BSU soccer adds 14 new recruits
Boise State Women’s Soccer Coach Steve Lucas announced the signing of 12 players to NCAA National Letters of Intent to Boise State and two transfers students.
The 12 current high school seniors joining the Broncos for the fall 2008 season are Megan Blanchard (Fresno, Calif.), Brandy Hickcox (Boise), Tiffany Hall (Boise), Janelle Jin (Castro Valley, Calif.), Kimberly Koeppen (Boise), Catherine Leewaye (Boise), Serena Montoya (Centennial, Colo.), Mandy Nader (Orange, Calif.), Lindsey Roberts (Richland, Wash.), Chelsea Robinson (Portland, Ore.), Elizabeth Ruiz (Boise) and Ashley Walsh (Vancouver, Wash.). The two transfers are both from Boise and are enrolled at BSU for this spring’s semester. They are Katie Derden, who is transferring from the University of South Carolina and Malia Hendrix, who is back from the University of Montana.
This marks the largest recruiting class in Bronco history. The new recruits will replace 11 graduating seniors and build upon last season’s second place finish in the WAC.
