ASBSU shouts out to the student body

As students settle into their new semester, the Associated Students of Boise State University are finding new ways to reach them.

ASBSU will be available to students every Monday because of a freshly created project called Shout-Out.

Shout-Out will be in the Student Union Building each Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students on break or strolling to class are welcome to talk to their government representatives.

The SUB is often a convenient place for students to refuel or take a break from class, which makes it an ideal location for Shout-Out.

Starting Feb. 18, a table will be placed in the Interactive Learning Center for the same purpose.

This project is designed to be a way for students to voice their concerns to ASBSU representatives.

“The whole purpose of Shout-Out is to make ourselves available to students,” ASBSU Chief of Staff Alyssa Dunlap said. “This is the first time to my knowledge that ASBSU has a special place to interact with students. That’s huge.”

There are about 19,000 students currently enrolled at Boise State. ASBSU has about 20 members, so the project seeks to make this difference smaller and student life more intimate.

Committed members of the executive staff desire this intimacy to connect and motivate students; they think enthusiastic students can ensure improvement in governmental results.

“Shout-Out tries to reach out. Being available in the SUB, students can shout out whatever they want. It only takes a couple of seconds [.] the more input, the more transformation,” Dunlap said.

Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Studies Sharon McGuire, who helped spear-head the project, also believes it can cause growth, development and improve student life.

Most students are aware that ASBSU exists, but are not aware of a way to contact them.

This can be a venue for students who have criticisms for their government.

New Boise State student Glenn Burkes expressed frustration at his class sizes. “There are 700 students between Math 24 and 108,” Burkes said. “There are so many [students]that I can’t get a book and have no teacher; there’s no room for them, and there is even a huge failure rate because of this.”

Another student said that parking can be addressed.

At the Shout-Out booth, ASBSU can hear problems like these from students and attempt to address them.

Transition from one year to another is often difficult within ASBSU.

When a new administration steps in, old programs are lost.

The current administration hopes that if Shout-Out is successful throughout the semester, the program will be preserved.

Many students seem excited about the possibility of being heard. Political science major Geoffrey Beausoleil said the program is a good idea.

“As far as I understand, there isn’t a very available avenue for students to communicate to their representatives. So it’s only appropriate to have one; otherwise, the system’s debunked,” Beausoleil said.

Other students share similar satisfaction with the new program.

“I think it creates an opportunity for students to have a say of what goes on at the school,” student Chris Christophi said.
