Thoughts from the bench

Let the madness begin. The regular season for college football is officially over, which means that the in-depth analysis can commence.

There are more than 12 coaches that will be drumming a new beat next season with a new squad, ten teams a-leaping with joy or sorrow, depending on their BCS bowl game match-ups, eight (or more) scenarios for the final polls, six, times ten, plus more, Broncos a-laying on Hawaii beaches, four Heisman birds, unhappy in New York and a new number dubbed by the BCS.

That’s all happened in just one sport, in a matter of days. Only one sport can produce such a chaotic frenzy. To add to the mix, let’s take a look at the controversial and sacred topic of the BCS.

Ohio State became the new number one last week to earn a trip to the national title game against a deserving LSU team. Many fans are complaining and believing that the Buckeyes’ lackluster schedule does not qualify them for such a high honor.

For Pete’s sake, they didn’t even beat a team this year that is currently ranked in the top 20. However, they only have one loss this season and most of their wins were in pretty decisive fashion.

So does that near-spotless record leap-frog the Buckeyes to the title game above other teams? I guess so. Any questions on that one, talk to the computer system.

The one team that really got snubbed by the polls, in my opinion, was the Georgia Bulldogs. It is currently one of the hottest teams in football, winning six of its last games played, including key wins over Florida and Kentucky.

Yet it has to settle for playing Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Not the most desired match-up for Georgia, but the way the BCS goes, it pays to win the SEC.

At the moment, Heisman talk is as sensitive a subject as the BCS. The three top candidates for the trophy are most likely Tim Tebow from Florida, Arkansas’ Darren McFadden and Hawaii’s Colt Brennan. My original choice for the award was Dennis Dixon out of the University of Oregon, but due to injury he has slipped from most voters’ ballots. So has his teams record. Regardless of who wins the award on Saturday, somebody out there will be livid.

My vote is for the sophomore sensation, Tebow. He is the first player in NCAA history to rush for 20 touchdowns and throw for 20 touchdowns.

Also, if he wins the award it will be the first time a sophomore has ever won it. Impressed yet? He also only has six interceptions compared to Brennan’s 14. Let’s not mention the word system quarterback between these two. Especially not near June Jones.

For local Bronco fans, happy about it or not, BSU will be returning to the islands for a match-up against East Carolina. Just think, a couple of weeks ago there was slim hope for a BCS berth. It’s a perfect example of what this college football season has been from start to finish.

Ranked opponents were throttled by unknown, unranked teams. Top players have been put off the radar and new, younger players have emerged.

But there is still more to come. The best is still out there and I guarantee there will be a new number one after Jan. 7. Don’t you just love college football?
