BSU softball makes history
Breaking ground for the 2009 softball season, newly appointed Head Coach Erin Bridges-Thorpe announced the signing of her first recruits Nov. 20 for Boise State’s inaugural softball season. Bridges-Thorpe received National Letters of Intent from two community college transfers, Renee Santos and Kathy Cox, as well as one true freshman, Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo, on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Santos committed early Wednesday morning. Santos will come to Boise after playing two seasons at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore., as a pitcher.
Sophomore Cox will also join the Broncos from the NWAACC, transferring from Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore. In national honors, Cox earned a 2007 All-American nod, while she was also dubbed as the 2007 Team MVP.
Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo joins the Broncos as Bridges-Thorpe’s third NLI as well as her first true freshman added to the 2008-09 roster. The Glendale, Ariz., native will look to aid the Broncos at first base.
Volleyball signs four
The 2007 volleyball season has barely come to an end, but the Boise State volleyball program is already turning its eyes to the 2008 season. The Broncos will welcome four freshmen: Eliza Pledger of Wilsonville, Ore.; Elizabeth Griffin out of Roseville, Calif.; Alexandra Diemer of Rocklin, Calif. and Lydia Blaha of Colorado Springs, Colo. to next season’s squad.
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, Pledger is BSU’s tallest signee, hoping to make an immediate impact as a middle blocker. BSU’s second signee, Griffin, will add all-around talent in the outside hitter position.
Entering as the smallest signee, the 5-foot 8 Diemer joins the Broncos as a setter. Coming in as the second of two middle blockers, Blaha adds great versatility with the ability to play right side, outside or middle at any time. The 6-foot tall high school senior recently led The Classical Academy to a Colorado Class 3A State Runner-Up title.
Women’s golf signs three
Boise State University Head Women’s Golf Coach Nicole Harris announced the signing of three golfers to National Letters of Intent Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Noelle Zavaleta, a senior from Wilson High School in Lakewood, Calif., is the 68th ranked golfer in the 2008 class. Robyn Kim, a senior from Los Alamitos High School in Cypress, Calif., is the 81st ranked golfer in the 2008 class. Katie Somers, a senior at Mount Si High School in Issaquah, Wash., qualified for the Junior World Golf Championships in July 2007.
BSU adds three new wrestlers
Boise State University Head Wrestling Coach Greg Randall has announced the signing of Jason Chamberlain, Randy Larson and Brian Owen to National Letters of Intent.
A senior at Springville High School in Springville, Utah, Chamberlain is the No. 1 ranked high school wrestler in the country by “Wrestling USA” Magazine at 135 pounds. Larson, a senior at Hermiston High School in Hermiston, Ore., competes at the 160-pound weight division. As a junior last year, Larson helped his team to the state title when he placed third at Oregon High School Championships. Owen is the nation’s No. 2 ranked high school wrestler at 119 pounds. Owen has lost only three matches during his high school career.
