River City Showdown coming to Boise

The River City Showdown is the Treasure Valley’s first 1-on-1 basketball tournament and will take place January. Players from around the Northwest are expected to compete in the Open Division where the winner will receive a $250 cash prize and an invitation to compete in the Idaho Stampede1s 2008 Free Agent Camp. The deadline to register is Jan. 4.

The 1-on-1 basketball tournament will have divisions for all ability levels and will be highlighted by its Open Division. The first round of play will take place on Jan. 19 at the Boys and Girls Club in Garden City.

The final 8 players from the Open Division will then move on to the Championship Round on Jan. 26 at Qwest Arena prior to the Idaho Stampede1s home game against the Los Angeles D-fenders.

The tournament, which is run by 3FOR3 Productions, LLC, was created in a similar mold to the Last Man Standing tournament held each summer at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Bronco volleyball heads to WAC tournament

Two short weeks ago, the Boise State volleyball team swept Louisiana Tech in its final home game of the 2007 season and will look to repeat that performance as the Broncos prepare to face the Lady Techsters in the opening game of the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M., Nov. 15, at 9:30 a.m.

This will be the third meeting between the two schools this season, splitting the series 1-1. The winner of the first match would then move on to play No. 1 seed Hawaii at 2:30 p.m., Thursday.

Broncos end fall season at husky invitational

Four Boise State women’s tennis players spent the weekend in Seattle at the 2007 Fall Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. Broncos Stacey Housley, Pichittra Thongdack, Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Bianca Jochimsen competed at the tournament, which lasted from Friday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 11.

BSU’s top player of the tournament, senior Stacey Housley, went 3-1 over the three days, making her way into the Flight 2 singles final where she faced Aleksandra Malovic of the Washington. Housley placed second in her bracket, dropping to Malovic 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

In doubles play, Wlodarczyk and Jochimsen joined together to go 1-1 over the weekend. Wlodarczyk and Jochimsen faced UW’s Joyce Ardies and Tara Simpson in the semifinals, dropping 8-3 to end their doubles play for the weekend.
