The rarely seen members of the underground hip-hop culture creeped through the cracks and back alleys to flood the sold-out Boise Venue on Wednesday , Oct. 10.
Rymesayers Entertainment is on the war path again with its Everybody Loves A Clown Tour. Minneapolis group Atmosphere took a break from the Twin Cities to drop in and shake the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd who “came hungry and left hot and bothered.” Song after song lit in red, backed by a five-piece band, Atmosphere’s front man Slug spit thought-provoking lyrics to eager listeners. When he came to town, “somehow a good number of us got down.”
Atmosphere mixed up the song selection with style, including tracks from the new album, songs not yet heard as well as classics dating back as far as the first record.
Slug brought some of his friends along with him. Appearances were made by Lucky I Am, Grayskul and Mac Lethal. All adequately lead the crowd through a perfect night of music that makes heads bob and bodies move.
Lucky I Am opened the show with authority. And as expected, Grayskul killed it. Mac Lethal also gave an impressive performance. His rhythm and lyrics matched his name: lethal. Through comedy and parody, Mac brought real-life issues to light with lyrical skill and unparalleled stage presence.
As Atmosphere stepped onto the stage, the crowd waited in silence. When Slug set down his suitcase, took off his hat and grabbed the mic, the crowd transformed from silent observers to an ecstatic mass of lyric-hungry savages.
Slug has the effect of a leader. What he says, people hear.
His lyrics connect and reflect real life, rather than the main steam stereotypical rap constantly talking about money and women.
Not only do fans look up to him. The members of the bands he tours with constantly have their necks bent upward in his presence.
“It feels good, it feels really good man. It’s dope. It’s a dope guy to look up to and shit, I think all of us are soaking up the knowledge that he gives us and he does a lot for us and bends over backward for us … he’s the shit man,” Mac Lethal said.
Rymesayers has been producing music and hosting shows for over a decade and will continue to do so even if people quit listening.
The Everybody Loves a Clown Tour has all ready hit 20 cities and has 22 more to go.
If the show hits the underground scene elsewhere as hard as it hit here in Boise, listeners should step out of the way or brace themselves to be moved.
