


Earlier this semester I commented on how dogs are becoming the new designer handbag and how this trend seems wrong, since canines are living, breathing animals and shouldn’t be purchased in a sick attempt to keep up with the trends.
Last week I uncovered an even more alarming trend.
I attempted to catch up with the magazines that have been coming to my house (sadly, textbooks take up my reading time in the fall) and advertisement after advertisement featured the same thing: babies.
I had to check the cover to make sure that I was reading “Instyle” and not “Parenting” magazine.
Their smiling, chubby faces were in advertisements for everything from credit cards to makeup.
This confused me. Why were babies next to my fall shoes? They don’t wear the shoes. They’re not gifts with purchase. What are they doing in fashion magazines? Have the editors forgotten what their magazine is about?
After examining what’s been going on in pop culture, I found the answer.
Babies are now chic. Much like pommeranians and labradoodles, they’ve become the “it” accessory.
What I call “celebrity smut” magazines (the ones that can’t be avoided when in line at the grocery store) always have at least one pregnant starlet on the cover.
Angelina Jolie and her 100 adopted children have been featured a dozen times in a variety of publications. Wow, she’s super-trendy!
Britney Spears has just had her children taken away (surprise, surprise).
Paris Hilton once lost her uber-trendy chihuahua.
I lost my white sunglasses (which, if you didn’t notice, were all the rage during the summer). One and the same?
Did Spears have children because she desperately wanted a family lifestyle?
Was it an “oops” moment? Or was she keeping up with the trends of the day?
Obviously she wasn’t ready for parenthood, so I’m thinking it was one of the last two.
Stars are having babies and giving them “unique” names.
True Religion makes baby jeans. Baby couture is expanding – Diesel, Lacoste and Puma are all making children’s clothes.
Sure beats Baby Gap.
Instead of personal ads placed by those looking for love, people are placing ads for sperm donors.
Some women even go so far as to seek men willing to impregnate them – all in pursuit of babies.
I have the same problem with children being chic accessories as I did with couture canines; living things shouldn’t be obtained because they’re a must for the season.
Trend followers that purchase pooches for the same reason that they would buy leggings definitely shouldn’t follow the children trend.
Dogs and children should only become companions to those who are ready for these added responsibilities.
Kids aren’t part of haute couture. I really don’t know how they came to be in my fashion magazines.
That space is reserved for shoes, bags, clothes and beauty products – not Pampers, Enfamil and car seats.
Keep the kiddies out of my magazines and avoid the child trend.
