Last Thursday the Boise State football team played host to the University of Southern Mississippi in front of 30,150 fans, color coordinated into a striped blue and orange out in Bronco Stadium. The occasion? BSU was playing its first nationally televised game of the season.
With the second consecutive game broadcast on ESPN this Sunday there was really nothing BSU could do but devise a second blue and orange out plan.
This time it won’t be stripes, but rather coordination between the entire upper level of Bronco Stadium, and the entire lower level.
“These 30,000 fans make more noise than stadiums that hold 70,000 or 100,000, or at least it seems that way when you are down on the field,” BSU Head Coach Chris Petersen said. “To have them color-coordinated like they do is just awesome and we love it. They show their love for this team and we know all our fans are devoted and will do whatever it takes to get us noticed.”
Fans who sit in the upper level of Bronco Stadium are asked to wear orange so that sections 101-111 and 124-130 will all be pure orange. The hope is that the upper level of the student section will also be orange, but that might be difficult considering the student section is on a first-come, first-serve basis and extends from the lower to the upper level.
All fans in the lower sections of the end zone, 5-11 and 23-26, are asked to wear blue. Fans sitting in both the south and north end zones are also asked to wear blue. If all goes as planned it will be the second of three accomplished color schemes in a row.
Prior to the Southern Miss game the university announced its plans to promote three different color schemes in all three ESPN games. The striped blue/orange out was the second success in as many years. Last season BSU fans did the same design against Fresno State.
“A lot of people say that the blue and orange out last week looked better this time than it did last time on TV,” Petersen said. “Our fans are awesome and you won’t find any like them anywhere.”
The Athletic Department hasn’t yet announced what the final color scheme will be when the University of Nevada – Reno travels to Boise Sunday, Oct. 14. One thing is for sure – there will be a lot of blue and orange involved.
“I know people love seeing the colors on TV,” Petersen said.
“People will be tuning in just to see what our fans are doing because it looks so great on TV. I know we give our opponents fits because of the noise we generate – sometimes they don’t expect it and when they get here and get down on that field they’re a bit surprised at just how loud it can get in there. They even could get distracted by our color schemes that our fans bring.”
