The event starts at 6:30 p.m. This year’s class includes men’s basketball star Roberto Bergersen, All-American gymnast Johnna Evans, quarterback Bart Hendricks, former Boise State President Dr. John Keiser, men’s tennis standout and Wimbledon Doubles Champion Wesley Moodie, Olympian and All-American track and field athlete Jarred Rome and NCAA national champion wrestler Kirk White.

Merrit wins Memorial Classic

Boise State University men’s golfer Troy Merritt captured the individual title at the 2007 Giustina Memorial Classic, Tuesday, as he shot a 69 (-3) in the final round to earn his place atop the leader board.

For the tournament, Merritt registered a 204 (-12) en route to the win, but the victory did not come easy. At the conclusion of the first round Merritt was tied for third place with three individuals with a 4-under 68. He then fired a tournament 67 (-5) to ascend the leader board into a tie for first place at 9-under. Merritt’s third round score of 69 (-3) matched the best score from Tuesday’s competition as he was one of only five golfers to record a score below 70 and propelled him to the victory.

This is the second tournament win of Merritt’s career. Last season he captured the individual title at the Ron Moore Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz., with a 13-under 203. Merritt has now posted scores of par or better in three straight rounds, four of the last five and in six of the last eight dating back to last season.

As a team the Broncos finished in eighth place with a 876 (+12), 10 strokes ahead of Idaho.

BSU women finish sixth

Three members of the Boise State University women’s golf team finished in the top 25 at the Giustina Memorial Classic hosted by Oregon State, Tuesday.

In her first collegiate competition as BSU’s No. 1 golfer, senior Nikki Olson led the Broncos as she remained consistent throughout the tournament en route to finishing tied for seventh place with a 224 (+8).

This is the best finish in Olson’s two year tenure with the program, eclipsing her previous mark of 234 (+18) set last season at the BYU Dixie Classic. Olson’s second round score of 73 (+1) was just one stroke away from matching her career low round of 72 (E), which she set at the BYU Dixie Classic. This is the first top 25 finish of Olson’s career.

Iris Ocariza finished tied for 20th place with a 230 (+14) to capture her sixth top 25 performance in just her 12th collegiate competition. As a team the Broncos finished in sixth place with a 922 (+58), one stroke ahead of Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State.

The BSU women’s golf team will continue its season Oct. 1-2, at the Heather Farr Invitational at Denver, Colo.
