


There are many people who work behind the scenes to guide the Boise State experience and direct the institution’s path into the future. The administration at Boise State consists of the president of the university and five vice presidents. In the University Organization, President Bob Kustra falls just underneath the Idaho State Board of Education Board of Trustees and his vice presidents fall just underneath him.
President Bob Kustra
It is the president’s job to direct the university and oversee all programs therein. According to his Boise State Website, Kustra and his administration emphasize upgrading admissions standards, improving the undergraduate experience and retention of first-year students and increasing the number of graduate and doctoral programs. Kustra took the job as president on July 1, 2003. At this point, the university has eight colleges with undergraduate, graduate and technical programs in more than 180 fields of interest.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Sona Andrews
The provost and vice president for academic affairs is the senior academic officer for the university. The provost oversees all academic activities, including academic personnel, budgets, programs and priorities. The provost ensures the quality of the faculty and student body by providing leadership in matters related to academic programs and policies, promotion and tenure, faculty recognition, library, university outreach, student retention, academic support services, the Honors College, institutional analysis assessment and reporting, service learning, the Center for Teaching and Learning and International Programs Office. The deans and leaders of academic administrative units report to
the provost.
According to the Boise State provost Website, the Provost’s specific duties consist of: academic quality and student success, ensuring a positive learning and working environment, implementation of the university’s strategic plan, and institutional accreditation and accountability. Andrews also oversees: recruiting and maintaining a top-quality faculty, managing academic appointments, searches, tenure and promotion and leading the university’s internalization efforts.
Vice President of University Advancement Howard Smith
According to the Boise State University advancement Website, university advancement includes the Alumni Association, Boise State Foundation, Bronco Athletic Association, university relations and government affairs.
The Alumni Association was formed in 1967 and consists of more than 50,000 alumni and 17,000 students. They “promote the advancement of academic excellence by fostering alliances among communities, the university and its current, past and future students. Programs and activities encourage alumni and friends to stay connected to Boise State, carry it with them and help enhance the university experience.”
According to the Boise State Website, the Boise State Foundation “raises funds and friends in support of the academic programs here at Boise State University. Over the years countless alumni and friends have made generous contributions in the form of cash, securities, real estate, insurance, or included the Foundation in their estate plans.”
As explained in the Boise State Website, the Bronco Athletic Association “supports the Boise State University Athletic Department mission statement, which is twofold. First, to provide opportunities for a meaningful athletic experience for as many students as possible,” and “second, to develop and maintain a competitive athletic program that competes on a regional and national basis.”
Communications and Marketing for Boise State promotes faculty/staff awareness and community involvement and produces news releases for local and national media. Their primary goal is to publicize the endeavors and achievements of students, faculty and alumni.
Vice President of Finance and Administration
Stacy Pearson
The departments that report to the VP of finance and administration are: the budget office, campus planning and facilities, department of the controller, human resource services, office of information technology,
Department of Public Safety, risk management and transportation, purchasing and the Taco Bell Arena.
According to the Finance and Administration Website, the budget office develops the annual operating and capital budgets in conjunction with the university’s Executive Leadership and Executive Budget Committee, the staff of the State Board of Education, and the Division of Financial Management of the Office of the Governor. Campus planning and facilities is responsible for the maintenance and operations of all state-owned buildings on the main and West campuses of Boise State, as well as planning, design and construction for new buildings and remodeling projects.
Human Resources gives students quick and easy access to everything they need to know or do to make their experience on campus as smooth and convenient as possible. They wish to guide and promote a diverse and ethical workforce, be responsive to change and recognize individuals. The office of Information Technology refers to an array of products and services that collect, transform, transmit, present and make data usable meaningful and accessible information.
The Department of Purchasing at Boise State serves and supports the overall interest of the university by providing a means to acquire a variety of goods and services responsive to the needs and challenges of the campus community.
Vice President for Student Affairs
Michael Laliberte
Laliberte is responsible for Student Affairs Departments, Student Affairs Events and Programs and Resources and Services. Student Affairs Departments consist of: Boise State Bookstore and Bronco Shops; Campus Recreation; Career Center and student employment; Children’s Center; Cultural Center; Disability Resource Center; Enrollment Services; Health, Wellness and Counseling Services; New Student and Family Programs; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Student Union and Student Involvement; University Housing and the Women’s Center.
According to the Student Affairs Website, student affairs and programs consist of: ASBSU, Distinguished Lecture Series, First Year Read Program, Greek Life, residential colleges and the Student Leadership Program. Resources and services involve communication with the students. This is advertising in the Bronco Student Update-Online Request, Mass e-mail, conference services, student code of conduct, Student Handbook, Student Health Insurance Program and University Dining Services.
Vice President for Research Mark Rudin
According to his Website, Rudin’s goal is to create a supportive environment for the research enterprise at Boise State University. His responsibilities include: developing relevant policies and procedures; strengthening support for the faculty, enhancing extramural funding; representing Boise State to external research and development agencies, organizations, governmental bodies, and sister institutions; provide oversight and assurances to outside regulatory agencies of Boise State’s compliance with academic research policies and regulations and promote research, scholarship and creative activity.
BARRY FRANKLIN
