Story

The beginning of a new semester can be exhilarating for some; for others, it can be stressful and overwhelming as the demands of school, teachers, friends, family, work, scheduling and money spiral into a myriad of chaos. The list of things to do can be too much. In the midst of this chaos a small or big crisis may occur.
Cars break down, jobs are lost, money is tight, people get sick, single parents struggle to get by and emotional problems or mental illness exists for some. Teachers and students alike must understand that stress and life events can impact a student’s ability to perform well in the academic arena. For this reason, it is important that as a university community, everyone works together to help each other, and to work together to maintain a positive, safe and secure campus environment. BSU provides many services to help students in a time of need. Here is a list of resources available to students.

Academic
Admissions and Registrar: For general information regarding enrollment, deadlines and registration, the admissions office and registrar’s office are equipped to help students. Their web page is http://admissions.boisestate.edu.

Teachers: Teachers are the main academic leaders. If a student is experiencing problems and doesn’t get the clarification, correct treatment, results or response needed, the department chair, dean of the college, vice president of student affairs, the provost office or Associated Students of Boise State University can help them find answers to questions and resolutions to academic problems.

Academic advising: Advising is available to help students plan their majors, degree programs, and meet requirements. Advising also helps students with problems related to academic probation. Advising offers free services to a tutoring center as well as academic skill building workshops.
Workshops are about two hours in length and are free to students. Workshops are offered at designated times throughout the semester, and include topics such as note taking, time management, study skills, test anxiety and stress reduction. Students can contact the advising office to schedule an appointment or visit their web site at http://academicsupport.boisestate.edu.

Transportation
Parking Services: Parking Services is improving and expanding the transportation amenities available to students. The Bronco Shuttle runs from 7am-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A new Bronco Shuttle runs from BSU to the Canyon County and BSU West campuses. If a student is experiencing transportation difficulty, Parking Services offers a Carpool Program. Students can also ride the Boise Public Transit with a bus pass, free of charge. For more information visit parking services at http://www.boisestate.edu/parking.

Financial Services
Financial Aid: The Financial Aid Office has many resources available to students.

“It is important for students to remember that March15th is the priority deadline for the following year’s financial aid award. FAF offers federal aid programs, work-study, federal and non-federal loans, and scholarships. Scholarships are also available through the department the student is in,” Dave Tolman in the Financial Aid office said.

Tolman commented further, “Students must be aware of satisfactory academic progress and good grades. 75% of classes a student attends need to be completed in good standing for student’s to receive aid. ‘W’ and ‘F’ count against students.” For more information about student loans, loan processing, scholarships or resources available visit http://finad.boisestate.edu.

Career Center: The Career Center at Boise Sate offers internships, job reference files and assistance in finding jobs both on and off campus to students and alumni. The Career Center hosts on-campus employment fairs. Career counselors are available to help students with resume writing and mock interviews for job placement or school interviews. The Career Center is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Visit http://career.boisestate.edu for more information.

Health Services
Health and Wellness Center: The Health and Wellness Center at BSU offers affordable health care, a referral program and insurance for BSU students.  The Health Center has a full staff of medical professionals to help students with their health care needs.  The Wellness Services provides students with a holistic basis to health care and offers preventional and promotional programs for students to become involved.

Counseling Services are available to help students with social, behavioral, academic or other emotional-psychological problems as well.  For more information about the services available http://www.boisestate/healthservices can provide students with more information.

Disability Services: Students with disabilities should contact Blaine Eccles or Wendy Turner at the Disability Office in the Administration Building. The Disability Office provides students suffering from disabilities with the accommodations that they are legally entitled to under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Campus recreation offers programs for the first time exerciser or the person who has been working out for years,” John Lloyd, Assistant Director of Facilities, said.

Campus recreation offers a wide assortment of services: personal training, affordable massage therapists, an outdoor program, a climbing gym and a Rec response team for diagnosis and treatment of injuries. Best of all, the Rec offers free fitness classes. The lineup of free classes includes step aerobics, cycle, yoga and pilates. Additionally, the Rec offers specialized instructional programs from Yoga to Belly Dancing.
