The Boise State women’s volleyball team put together record-setting performances this past weekend to kick off the 2007 season.

The Broncos swept the University of Texas-San Antonio 30-19, 30-12, 30-26 on Friday and then blanked Cal State University-Fullerton 30-25, 31-29, 30-28 on Saturday morning to cap off the best start for Boise State since 2000.

Saturday night the Broncos dropped their first match of the season to No. 24 Santa Clara 27-30, 26-30, 24-30.

BSU made quick work of UTSA completing its first season-opening sweep since the 2004 season. Outside hitter Jamie Claussen tipped off her senior campaign with a double double, finishing with 12 digs and a team-high 12 kills. Claussen recorded nine double-double performances in 2006.

In her first appearance as a Bronco freshman libero Lauren Hamm led the team with 17 digs. Junior setter Mandy Klein is back for the Broncos and making her presence felt. Klein ranks seventh all-time on the Broncos career list in assists and posted 41 against the Roadrunners. To date, Klein now has 1,780 assists on her career and with just 83 more will take sole possession of sixth place as she continues to climb into the record books.

In their match against CSU-Fullerton the Broncos came ready to play, out-hitting the Titans .255 (55-20-137) to .163 (49-27-135). Junior middle-blocker led the way for BSU completing a hitting-percentage of .462 (7-1-13) alongside Claussen who posted 12 kills and 13 digs for her second double double of the early season.

Newcomer freshman Sadie Maughan was impressive in just her second career match. Against UTSA Maughan posted the Broncos fifth-most attempts without an error since 1993 and against CSU-Fullerton hit .294 (7-2-17) to impress the coaching staff.

BSU put together two impressive matches and out blocked its  opponents in both 9.0 to 7.0 as Maughan led the way with four total blocks.

It was almost too good to be true for BSU before it fell to No. 24 Santa Clara Saturday night. The Broncos kept it close with Santa Clara in every match losing 27-30, 26-30, and 24-30 to one of the nation’s top programs.

Sophomore Arlee Tamietti had the biggest night of her young career leading BSU with 10 kills, hitting .348 (10-2-23) and also earned a spot on the Broncos Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Also joining Tamietti on the All-Tournament team was senior outside hitter Jamie Claussen who averaged 10.6 kills and 9.6 digs during the three match, round-robin tournament.

The Broncos will now prepare to head to Spokane, Wash. to participate in a two-day tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

BSU will face Morgan State University  on Friday and then meet up with University of Washington and Gonzaga University for Saturday’s double-header.
