In March 2001, the Women’s Center created a newspaper publication that worked to recognize Women Making History throughout Idaho as a part of Women’s History Month.
Stories that highlighted women working hard to make a difference in the community were based on nominations submitted by those in the community and at Boise State University.
Each year since, the Women’s Center has printed more than 28,000 copies of the 20-page newspaper featuring outstanding women in Idaho who were making history. Copies have been inserted into “The Boise Weekly,” “The Idaho Statesman” and “The Arbiter.”
Each year, the women are recognized at a special reception that includes their guests and all the student writers.
According to the Women’s Center Programming Graduate Assistant Petya Stoyanova, the purpose of the annual paper is to honor women in Idaho.
“She [the nominee] just has to have made a change in her community. It doesn’t matter how big her community is,” Stoyanova said.
For Women’s History Month 2008, community members are encouraged to identify women they know are making history, or a woman who works hard and gets little recognition.
Whether they are from classes, family or friends, writers are looking for ordinary women living extraordinary lives.
In this year’s newspaper, 25 women will be featured. Since space is limited, the Women’s Center recommends that nominations are submitted early.
The nomination form can be found at http://womenscenter.boisestate.edu. Nominations for the next publication are due no later than Sept. 17, 2007 before 5 p.m.
