Broncos Take Part in Extreme Makeover
On Tuesday, July 17, a contingent of Boise State University student-athletes stepped up to help Extreme Makeover: Home Edition put the finishing touches on a new home for fellow Boise State student Ryan Stockdale and his family.
Stockdale and his wife, Karia, have four children ages two to six, each of whom suffer from a rare white blood cell disease called eosinophilic esophagitis.
The condition of the Stockdale’s home jeopardized the health of their children, thus Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and CBH Homes stepped in to help find a cure for the disease, provide a safe environment for Stockdale’s children and give them a lasting home.
Led by academic counselors Valerie Cleary and Chelsea Herman, 11 members of the Bronco football team also lent a hand in the television show’s efforts, moving furniture and entertaining the volunteers and spectators.
Freshman quarterback Mike Coughlin, who watches the show with his mom, said they moved everything from couches to a piano into the new home.
Coughlin, freshman tight end Tommy Gallarda, junior tight end Chris O’Neill, sophomore tight end Richie Brockel, freshman linebacker Derrell Acrey, senior fullback Michael Lose, freshman running back Doug Martin, freshman linebacker Hunter White and three walk-ons who will join the team this fall each lent some muscle to the project on move-in day.

BSU backup arrested
A Boise State University football player was arrested July 20 on charges of driving under the influence.
According to Boise Police Public Information Officer Charles McClure, Jonathan B. Helmandollar was taken into custody after Boise Police received a call at 10:55 a.m, reporting a vehicle on Orchard St. had just swerved, hit the curb and then continued driving erratically with a flat tire.
Police later found the vehicle near the area of Orchard and Fairview and were able to locate Helmandollar at a local business. Helmandollar failed a standard field sobriety test, but according to police he was under the influence of a different substance than alcohol.
A drug test was performed on Helmandollar. Drug tests are sent off to the state lab and results are not yet available.
Helmandollar, a redshirt junior, was expected to be one of Ian Johnson’s backups for the 2007 football season. Helmandollar’s best season came in 2004 when he led the Broncos in rushing touchdowns with 14 and rushed for 232 yards on 43 carries. Helmandollar also set a school record with five touchdowns against Louisiana Tech.
