Petersen will not change recruiting approach

Although Boise State Head Coach Chris Petersen wants to put the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl behind him and move on, he can’t help but admit that the exposure has helped him get his foot in the door of some of the nation’s best recruits.

Petersen announced Monday during the WAC Football Media Preview in San Jose, Calif., that his recruiting approach has not changed.

“I don’t want to change our recruiting style at all,” Petersen said. “We look for special types of players. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we don’t recruit the top prospects unless we feel they would fit into our system.”

Petersen and the rest of the Boise State recruiting staff have long been known for seeking out players who fit into their special, high-powered offense and hard-nosed defense.

“Not everyone fits into our system, even if you’re one of the best athletes in the country,” Petersen said. “We look for a certain work ethic, attitude and determination that is committed to winning and that will never change.”

Boise State is also well known for recruiting homegrown talent as well.

There is little doubt, however, that the Fiesta Bowl has peaked players interests around the country. “When it comes down to it most kids are concerned about how many games will be on television and how good our facilities are,” Petersen said. “We’re still working on that aspect, but we feel like we’ve come along way.”

BSU has proven with its vast success just how vital it is that recruits have a desire to fit into the Bronco’s unique system.

“I know Coach Pete goes out on the road to talk with guys interested,” Boise State tailback Ian Johnson said. “But unless they’re ready to work hard, work for the team and be a part of a winning attitude then we’re not interested, no matter how good they are."
