All eyes on Brennan

Not since BYU quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy in 1990 has a Western Athletic Conference signal caller been in the hunt for college football’s most coveted individual prize – until today. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has been named the WAC’s preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive preseason and will be in hot pursuit of the Heisman Trophy, along with Boise State’s Ian Johnson.

Brennan’s Warrior resume is overflowing. During the 2006 season Colt threw an NCAA record 58 touchdowns and finished with a 185.96 pass efficiency rating. Brennan led the nation in seven statistical categories including completing 72.6 percent of his passes, all while breaking or tying 18 NCAA records, 17 WAC records and 41 school records. In 2006 Colt was the team’s second-leading rusher with 366 yards and five touchdowns. He led Hawaii to its first Associated Press Top 25 ranking since 1993 and also helped Hawaii to a school-record nine-game winning streak.

“I’m just excited that Colt elected to come back,” Hawaii Head Coach June Jones said. “Our receivers across the board are some of the best I’ve ever had and that will only make Colt better this season.”

Jones went as far as to compare the Heisman hopeful to NFL legends Dan Marino, Jeff George and Jim Kelly. “He reminds me of these great players in the history of the game and has the potential to be one of the best,” Jones said.

Brennan takes it one day at a time. The California native was not recruited out of high school and walked on at Colorado before eventually transferring to Hawaii.

“I try not to get caught up in all the talk,” Brennan said. “What is most important to me is that we go out every night, play hard and win games. Everything else is just secondary to me."
