The parking garage being built on university near The Arbiter/Women’s Center is on schedule. The garage is to be opened August 10, 2007 and has had no problems.
When complete, the structure will provide a total of 900 new parking spaces.
The total cost of the garage, lot and office spaces that will be in the garage is $11.4 million.
“[The construction] is going pretty good,” Executive Director of Campus Safety and Transportation Jared Everett said. “It is on
schedule as of our last meeting a few weeks ago.”
Everett said the building won’t meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications. LEED is a
nationally-accepted rating system that determines a building’s overall performance.
There are five areas considered by LEED qualifications, including how the building impacts human and environmental health.
The qualifications are: conservation of water, sustainable site development, energy conservation, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
However, techniques such as low water landscaping are going to be used.
In addition, the offices that will be in the building will not be
padded and carpeted; they will use the basic cement foundation.
Other green building efforts are being explored like the use of solar panels on the top of the building’s roof to assist in energy
proficiency. At this point, no plans are finalized.
