When excellence is expected, the pressure to produce seems to be greater than ever.

Fortunately for Boise State women’s tennis coach Mark Tichenor his team is doing everything they can to live up to the expectations.

“I think you just get on the wave and keep riding it.” Tichenor said about continuing the winning tradition at BSU. “Anybody that looks on [broncosports.com], it’s every team that’s [winning].

Our team knows how other teams are doing.”

Tichenor said his team is doing its part in carrying over the fast start of the men’s tennis program and also the Fiesta Bowl champion BSU football team.

The women are 3-0 in 2007 coming off wins against Montana State-Billings and University of Utah Feb. 2-3.

“We had a really good weekend,” Tichenor said. “We pretty much went down there and played unbelievable. I thought our doubles were really good considering we had to mix it up. Our girls play hard. They play passionately. They play as a team and that’s one thing we stress more than anything.”

The Broncos continue their season with the Boise State Invitational this Friday through Sunday.

Coach Tichenor said he is excited about the fast start and he is confident his team has the potential to keep the success coming.

“We’re playing two really good teams (this weekend),” Tichenor said. “They’re going to be really good match-ups. There will be opportunities, just like injuries or anything else. There is always an opportunity for somebody.”

The Broncos host University of Montana, University of Nevada-Reno and Wichita State University in the first home tournament of the spring.

The Broncos played at home twice during fall competition but haven’t been in front of a home crowd since Nov. 5 for the fall Boise State Invitational tournament.

“Its fun playing at home,” Tichenor said. “We have great fans come watch us at home. It’s fun for the girls to play in front of their friends.”

Tichenor did say it can be tough transitioning from the fall set of competition to the spring meets because of the awkward lay off between each season.

The team conditioned through the winter months and essentially spent from Nov. 12 to Feb. 1 off the courts preparing physically.

“Right now the biggest improvement is conditioning,” Tichenor said. “You can tell, basically, our match against Utah we were stronger, we were faster. They feel good. They feel like they’re in good shape.”

The Broncos will only have the privilege of playing in Boise two more times during the regular season.

BSU hosts Washington State University March 31 and also the Boise State Spring Classic April 12-15.

Boise is the host site for the 2007 Western Athletic Conference championships, which will give BSU a huge advantage in hosting the conference tournament at home.

“We have to keep improving, taking it one match at a time, one day at a time,” Tichenor said. (We have) to keep improving and see what happens. It’s a long season it’s not a sprint.”

BSU’s first match of the weekend starts at 9:30 a.m. friday morning against the Montana Grizzlies.
