The RECreation Center offers instructional classes to shake up routine

Fitness experts regularly report one of the main reasons people stop working out is boredom. Well, can you blame them?

Who really wants to pick up the same weight 10 times, set it down and repeat that process two more times.

Now do that for every lift you do, every time you hit the gym. Sure your heart rate will go up, but the only real excitement in that type of workout is what song your iPod will randomly select next.

When the time is right to inject some new life into your old workout routine Boise State’s instructional programs at Campus Recreation have you covered.

Instructional programs are service classes, for a small fee, that go above and beyond the regular exercise programs Campus Recreation offers.

“We wanted to be able to offer our members a chance to take part in some really fun, exciting programs,” Fitness Coordinator Kate Coghlan said.

Unlike a normal fitness class where any gym member can pop in at anytime, instructional program participants sign up at the beginning of the class session and participate with the same group of people and the same instructor for six or 12 weeks. Once this group is set no one else is allowed to join the class.

“These classes are a great way to get a foundation in something, or take your skills to a higher level,” Coughlan said.  “They’re also great for those individuals who wouldn’t normally just stop in and workout with a group of strangers.”

By limiting the class Coughlan says instructors are able to target the needs of the group and after each class the group is able to progress to a higher level.

The final result – participants come out mastering the class.
Whether it’s learning the basic footwork of salsa dancing, meditating in motion with T’ai Chi or shaking your body like a belly dancer – chances are you’ll find something in these programs that interests you.

Instructional program classes start as low as $35 for gym members and $49 for non-members.

Full-time students at BSU are already members of Campus Recreation – a cost covered by their student fees.
